Re: No whistle Youtube thread? Well then!
Two great workshop days with Brian and a very nice session with many profi musicans. And many many new tunes. I think I will upload some traditional tunes or some Joanie Madden tunes soon. But I am not shure if I have the time to make a video. Maybe it'll be just an audio file.
I have three gigs next week and we'll make to musicvideos so there will be a few new videos next time.

Waltzing Matilda
The microphone I'm using a simple lapel mic attached to the mouthpiece with a bit of glue-on Velcro. The mic is jacked into a Digitech RP 300 peddle that is USB'd into my system. Very simple and it works pretty well.

Check this out, Brenda Smyth playing Bachelor's Walk and the Congress: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYa9gBefDts
Her expression reminds me of Mary Bergin, so funny! Outstanding whistling. What whistle is she playing? Reyburn?

Found some folks who let me sit in w/ them. This is at our local Irish Fair on March 13th. Didn't have the mic up high enough, but that's probably a good thing.

And at last a set of reels which I've learned from the playing of Brian O'Connor at the workshop session here in Bonn. He played it together with Jens Kommnick and it sounds.........well not enough superlatives in german and english for it
It's called "Martin's Grove":

Re: No whistle Youtube thread? Well then!
Not meaning to sound like I'm critising...I'm not, but you look like you tense up when you go for the second octave. I've recently noticed I do too, so maybe I'm seeing it everywhere and maybe it isn't a fault to do it. I'm treating my tension in the second octave as a fault though, and I'm working to relax it. To me your fingers are putting meaning to the phrase, 'Reaching for the notes', in that they suddenly seem to stiffen and shoot up much higher off the whistle than they do in the lower octave.
Having said all that, your playing is still far better than mine and your guitar playing has certainly improved...At least in the first two youtube clips .

Yes I know^^Mick Down Under wrote:Not meaning to sound like I'm critising...I'm not, but you look like you tense up when you go for the second octave.Mick
It's a big problem of my playing. I start to play a tune and i keep the speed but in the second parts I often start to run. But I am working on that with a metronom
That's a problem I have since 14 years when I've started to play the recorder. I don't know why I do this. I really have to concentrate my self not to hit my nose with my fingers. Everytime I give more pressure to reach the secon octave, I also give more power into my fingers and every muscel in my body.....madMick Down Under wrote:To me your fingers are putting meaning to the phrase, 'Reaching for the notes', in that they suddenly seem to stiffen and shoot up much higher off the whistle than they do in the lower octave.

I'm sorry I haven't replied to this yet. I'm temporarily without YouTube access (long story), and I'll look at your clips as soon as I can.DerElligh wrote:It comes late but at last I've managed it to record something traditional as you whished. I've jused a Tony Dixon High D.

Well, some new stuff of myself. I've uploaded a few whistle tracks I've played with my new band "ceolma".
We have a myspace page since yesterday. Maybe you want to have a look, listen to some tunes and leave a comment there?

Cheers,
Stefan
