I've had an Edirol R-09 for a couple of months, and I really like it a lot. The sound quality with the built-in mics is so good that I haven't seen the need for an external mic.

It's very flexible (record WAV or MP3 at various quality levels) and very easy to use, once you spend a little time with the manual. Moving the files to the computer is as easy as using a USB flash drive.

With a pair of fully charged rechargeable AAs, I get 6-7 hours of recording.

A couple of things to consider:

(1) The build quality isn't impressive, especially the little door on the bottom that you have to use to get to the batteries and SD card.

(2) For live music, turn off the AGC (automatic gain control) and get a level. That's easy to do, because the level meters on the front are easy to see, and there's a peak light. If you hit peak, you'll get distortion.

By the way, the included SD card is too small for practical use. I maxed it out with a 2GB one.

Thanks again guys for all your suggestions and input.

That Edirol RO9 is a sweet looking piece of kit, but is
well beyong my budget for now at $400. I will probably
settle for an Olympus DS2 for the present, as it was
so highly praised on these boards and is available for
as low as $94.

What I was kinda hoping is that there was something
as good in quality but with a bit more memor, and that
it didn't cost a whole deal more.

If I come into a bit of extra cash that Edirol is on my list.

Sounds too good to be true.
It is :) , $299 seem to be the current price, slightly lower on eBay with a bit of luck.

I use Hi-MD for record, very good sound (best than mp3 recorders i think)
It's cheap, you can have several 1go disks (5$ each).
Record in pcm and upload on the computer.

I'm using an Olympus VN-3100PC for recording my lessons. So far so good. Easy to use and download wmv from.
