christy barrys 2
christy barrys 2
I'm currently looking at learning the tune 'Christy Barrys 2' next. It looks a like one the first notes is a low C (one line below the
main staff lines). What should I play since my D whistle only goes down to D?

Re: christy barrys 2
If it's the tune I think it is, it's a low B, and I just play the 'normal' high B. You can also play anything else that sounds nice, a G usually works.bigpow5 wrote:I'm currently looking at learning the tune 'Christy Barrys 2' next. It looks a like one the first notes is a low C (one line below the

But that's Christy Barry's #1; the tune they're talking about here is #2, the one that's usually played after it in a set. If I remember correctly the one that's being discussed in this thread (Christy Barry's #2) was composed by Sully (Tony Sullivan I think is his name), a banjo player and composer, and his title for it is The Butlers of Glen Avenue. I think Christy himself composed the first tune in the set, and I believe he plays a third one at the end as well.anniemcu wrote:The Session has it in G at

The second one appears at the link below on The Session, but as usual with The Session it's an awful transcription; I wouldn't learn it from there...as a general rule I wouldn't use The Session for learning any tune as about 90% of the transcriptions I've seen there are bad. The transcription of Christy Barry's #1 is equally poor...it really misses a lot of what makes this tune special.

The Session is set up for folks to submit their own transcriptions. If you have a better one, I'm sure all would appreciate if you would post it.

If someone else wants to post this one there, that's fine with me...this version is much closer to the basic structure of the tune as it's normally played. And I agree with Theo - on the whistle or flute, just play the low B in the first bar one octave above. It sounds a little funny when you're playing solo, but if you're playing with a fiddle, banjo, accordion, or other instrument that can hit the low B, it sounds just fine.anniemcu wrote: The Session is set up for folks to submit their own transcriptions. Several groups including Lunasa have recorded this tune under the name "Butlers of Glen Avenue" but that's wrong...I remember seeing a transcription in Sully's own book and Christy Barry's #2 is indeed the Butlers of Glen Avenue, not this tune. Dunno the name of this one though.

I don't have it on hand to check, but I seem to remember Lunasa's tunebook saying they had the name wrong for that one and were not sure of the correct one.bradhurley wrote:Several groups including Lunasa have recorded this tune under the name "Butlers of Glen Avenue" but that's wrong...I remember seeing a transcription in Sully's own book and Christy Barry's #2 is indeed the Butlers of Glen Avenue, not this tune.
