Burke Whistles Stolen :-(

Post by amadan_whistle »

Hi All,

Well, sad to say, but my two Burke whistles were stolen along with my Epiphone MB-250 banjo on Jan. 28th, 2006 in Portland, OR :moreevil: I had a DBSBT marked "12 of 2003" and an E Aluminum Pro marked "8 of 2003". Both whistles are pretty tarnished and the DBSBT has a small dent on the edge of the last hole where a drummer from another band though it would be nice to use my whistle to play a rim shot on a snare drum...Aaack!

For any banjo players, my banjo post is here: http://www.banjohangout.org/forum/topic ... C_ID=46591

Thanks for keeping a lookout. That Burke whistle for sale on eBay had me a little hopeful 'cause I would sure never want to sell my Burke whistles...they've taken some serious pub-style abuse and sound(ed) great.

Very sad to hear about your loss Jeremy. I do hope that you recover

your instruments and that the ***hole(s) who are responsible for this

theft are brought to justice. (please excuse my language, but this sort of

thing really angers me.) I am playing for an upcoming Cancer Benefit

Concert on Saturday March 4th and have already made arrangements

with someone to keep watch over my bagpipes and my whistles when

they are not being played. Best of luck to you Jeremy, I hope that your

instruments are returned to you soon.

Alas, the world has an overabundance of thieves and deceivers. I hope you can locate your instruments and have justice on the perpetrators. Don't hesitate to notify the local pawn shops if you haven't already done so.

My condolences also. I was the victim of a break-in years ago and remember the feeling (literally slept with the light on that night).

May whoever stole it develop such a case of WHOA that he or she has to pawn all their furniture, TV, and refrigerator -- hmm ... wonder how good the acoustics would be whistling in an empty house :boggle:

I second the tip about contacting pawn shops. Doubt they come across too many whistles, so it sound definitely stand out.

Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Hope you find them.

A friend of mine had her house broken into and the only thing they left were her flute and piccolo.

Thanks for all the replies and moral support everyone! I'm just about to order up some more Burke whistles...never thought I'd be pro insurance...it definitely helps, even though the deductible is worth 4 Burke whistles. I'd much rather just have all my stuff back...I liked that dent in the whistle as it happened at a really fun show.

I was lucky not to have my O'Riordan whistle stolen...that one never leaves the house...but really should 'cause it is amazing...happy playing!

I know exactly how you feel about your O'Riordan whistle. Whenever I

play mine in public, I am ALWAYS aware of where it is. That is, it NEVER

is out of my sight....never. But that holds true for all of my whistles now. I

can remember a time when one could leave ones whistles on a table at a

gig and know that they would be there upon returning after the break.

Sadly, this is no longer so. I remember being at a Joannie Madden concert

in Milwaukee a few years ago. At the half time of the concert the group

all left the stage and their instruments were right there in full view. I'm

sure that someone was watching them for her, but someone could

have approached the stage and taken one and damaged it. It's just not

worth the risk. Good luck with your new whistles and banjo Jeremy.

When Cherish the Ladies played in Little Rock last year, they left their instruments out on a table during break.

There was no need to fear: several members of the local groups that had sponsored them stood by and watched over the instruments like hawks. No one was going to get anywhere even close to those instruments!

Jeremy, I am sorry for your loss. I hope you can eventually recover your whistles!

I can't even imagine trying to make off with one of Joannie's whistles: just touching it would likely singe your hand and leave a permanent scar. About as sensible as trying to make off with Matt Molloy's flute!
