Ashokan Farewell

Post by Turtle »

hello all, I tried using the search to find this, but only came up with two
dead ends. I heard Ashokan Farewell played on the fiddle last night, and
was wondering if anyone had made a sound clip of this tune on the whistle.
It's a beautiful tune, and one I would really like to learn. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You think it's beautiful now, but wait until you've heard it about 37 trillion times, including the 4 times you'll have heard it played by competent fiddlers.

The tune is by Jay Ungar, and if you poke around on Amazon or someother site you'll find a recording.

Get an A whistle for the easiest playing. It can be done on a D, but its not pretty.

Tell us something.: I've played Irish flute most of my life. My band Celtic Waves has been performing in Honolulu for the last 17 years.

Yes it is a beauty. Out here in the middle of the Pacific it's not heard too much so I still enjoy hearing/playing it. There are a few tunes that take a long time to go stale and, for me, this is one of them (although hearing it over an over and over in the Civil War series was a bit much; but I've gotten over that).

The fiddlers usually play this in D which makes it go below whistle/flute range so you've got to do all this octave switching - not fun - not pretty. So as Tyghress says use an A whistle to play along with the fiddle. You play it on an A whistle as though it were in G and the only messy thing to worry about is one "F natural" fingering.

If you PM me I'll email you the dots in a Finale file.

It certainly is easier/better to play on an A whistle. On my A whistle, however, hitting the high G at the end of the first "A" part is not a nice sound! Maybe I need a better whistle or better technique. I usually just drop down a note to the E and finish the first "A" part on that note.
