Well,I have jokingly tried to make a flute from an onion stem before, but never a recorder.....hmmm.....

I do also 'lurk' on the Yahoo Recorder messageboard from time to time, but 'C. & F.' seems like 'home'

I despise, loathe, hate and wish to burn all recorders in a vast all-encompasing witch-hunt. This is primarily because we had to play them at school, otherwise I'd probably think they're pretty cool. Thankfully we didn't have to play whistles at school, otherwise the instrument of the gods would be the subject of my wrath.

People who complain about recorder looks may fail to grasp the classical balance of their architecture.

Looking it up in the Encyclopædia Galactica, you learn that:

The (neo-Classical) Baroque Order (aka Greek, else Grec Order ) is easily distinguished
from the properly classical orders (Doric, Ionian, Corynthian and Mezzopotamus) by its structure.
See, it incorporates a
Hognasus just under the Libidinum.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

Hard to hate something with a part called a "pignose." Perhaps I'll modify my position. After all, we have several left over from childhood lying around my mom&dad's house which we see perfectly fit to hand to the toddlers as toys and weapons.

I do not feel obliged to believe that that same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.

A--hole, eh? Fair enough
Well, I thought I weighed my words... Unless, of course, you're warming up or unclogging the whistle with ALL holes shut but the bell.
It's a bit like planes: they're more sucked up than bouncing over the air. ;)

Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.

I can't say toooo much negative about recorders, since it was the aformentioned Red Priest player that actually got us started on our trek to whistledom.

We bought recorders, nice, tweaked ones, and did not really like them: quiet, not much in the upper octive and they just did not feel right. The fact that you had to spend $500, yes $500 to get a sort of decent (read low end of the quality scale) wooden one in the key I was interested in was a HUGE turn off as well. Do you know how many QUALITY whistles you can buy for $500?

I also hate it when too much air escape through the A-hole too. Really nasty, that.

We are happy with our whistle playing.

They just sound too damn tooty! Like a calliope without the charm.

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

I love recorders, they pay my bills!

Seriously, I used to really dislike them, but then I realized I'd really only heard/played low to mid quality recorders.
JessieK wrote: I don't like the second octave on most recorders...it's screechy in the upper notes.
You need to play a really top quality recorder, the best are not screechy at all on the top end, and they sound much less piercing than most whistles do in the second octave.

You would absolutely love the really good alto and tenor recorders Jessie.
