This is probably only the 3rd time I've seen them and they are still breath taking! In PA, I only saw red, but still beautiful to witness. I was shooting pictures like crazy (both digital and film). Here's the brightest one I could capture with my digital before they started to fade:

FinePix 3800 3 sec. @ F2.8
My digital camera is quite slow at capturing light and at night, quality is out the window. But still cool!

- Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

Aurora Australis was visible a few days ago in Australia. Apparently people about 50 miles away from Wollongong saw a worthwhile show although we are too far north around here to see it at anything like its best. There will be another show tonight but it's very overcast so I won't drive off to find a good vantage point. Wollongong is far too large a city for the lights to be visible here—too much interference from artificial light.

Artguy, where in Northeastern PA do you live? I live in easton (about as Eastern as you can get in PA, another mile and I'de be in NJ) and it has been raining here like heck for the past 3 days or so. The Deleware river, Lehigh River, and the Bushkill Creek are all on Flood watches, the Lehigh did flood some low Lying roads and so did the bushkill creek. I'm just currious where are you that you didn't have heavy cloud cover?

In Jersey Shore, PA, of course! About 20 miles west of Williamsport (home of Little League, if that means anything to you). No where near New Jersey.Cyfiawnder wrote:Artguy, where in Northeastern PA do you live?...I'm just currious where are you that you didn't have heavy cloud cover?
I was near you not long ago at the Celtic Fest.

They were saying we might even be able to see it down here in North Texas, but so far no luck. It was seen in Missouri, though, and that's saying something considering that it was fairly rare to see even when I lived in Iceland for three years.
I remember one time up there I must have stood out in the cold for two or three hours watching because it was as if the sky were alive with blueish green snakes. I saw the "northern lights" a half dozen or so times in the three years I lived there, but that one night was far and away the brightest, wierdest, display of them all.

Living in Minnesota I can generally see at least some faint aurora once a year, but I usually don't get the good stuff except for during one of the peak years (aurora has an 11 year cycle of intensity, we are right now a year or two past the peak for this cycle). Unfortunately, it has been very cloudy during this entire solar episode so I haven't gotten to see any of the really kick ass stuff you guys have. I'm very jealous.

I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. We are so used to the Northern Lights that it is almost a cliche with us. They are almost always green, except when something spectacular happens.
We were really looking forward to the display that was anticipated for two nights ago. You know what we saw? Clouds. Grump.
I've seen some great displays, though. Always thought of them as God fingerpainting... But this was supposed to be a really good one and we had clouds. Urg.
