CP: ANNOUNCING Three new Freeman tweaked whistles ...

Post by Jerry Freeman »

Tweaked D Clarke Original
Wider body low F tweaked Generation
Wider body tenor G tweaked Generation
PLUS a Kevin Crawford soundclip of the new high Enat tweaked Generation

High Enat tweaked Generation = $61.95 Here's Kevin playing one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4IQzDVNs-U

Tweaked D Clarke Original = $49.45

Clean, focused voicing that showcases the Clarke’s ethereal, "old school" pure-drop traditional tone. Much more comfortable breath requirement compared to untweaked. The block has been reshaped to create a proper beak for a more comfortable embouchure.

Gareth Laffely demonstrates a Freeman tweaked Clarke Original key of D whistle. (Gareth is an award winning Native American Flute player who was has been hailed as "The Future of Native American Flute." At age 17 his album "Sky Before a Storm" reached #2 on the Billboard New Age music chart.)

— Wider Bore/Bigger Sound Tenor G Tweaked Generation = $99.00

This is a new design with a standard bore (the original design is a narrow bore). The new, standard bore key of tenor G tweaked Generation has a fuller, stronger, louder tone and stronger bottom end while retaining the sweet, velvety high end and good balance across registers.

— Wider Bore/Bigger Sound Low F Tweaked Generation = $99.00

This is the same design as the new tenor G tweaked Generation, with a full, strong tone and strong bottom end with a sweet, velvety high end and good consistency across registers.

Byung Ho Kwon demonstrates a Freeman tweaked low F Generation whistle. The first part of the video is without reverb and is short so I’ve repeated it a second time. The second part has a little added reverb and showcases Byung Ho Kwon’s exquisite playing. (He is South Korea’s 2018 pop Recording Artist of the Year.)

Freeman Whistles Descriptions and Ordering Information

MELLOW DOG Wide Body, Pure & Full Voiced

Wide-body whistle, bigger sound, takes more push at the top of the upper register. For some who like to lean into a whistle, this is desirable (e.g., Cillian Vallely, who praises the fact that you can play a Mellow Dog more dynamically than with most whistles ). For others, who may prefer a whistle that takes more subtle breath (e.g., Kathleen Conneely), the Blackbirds, Bluebirds and tweaked Generations may be more suited. Most people are comfortable with all of my whistles and easily switch back and forth among them.

-- D Mellow Dog = $49.45

-- Mellow Dog D/C set (1 top, 2 tonebodies) = $59.45

BLUEBIRD

Sweet and Pure Generation-Based Voicing (Depending on availability may come with brass or nickel tonebody. If you have a preference, please specify):

-- D or Eb Bluebird = $42.95

Bluebirds are tweaked with the same specifications as Blackbirds. Based on a Generation whistlehead, they retain some of the Generation character in a whistle that's voiced significantly purer/sweeter, as you can hear.

In honor of Iarla McMahon, age 10, from County Down, winning the 2014 All Ireland under 12 whistle championship playing a Freeman tweaked Bluebird, L.E. McCullough, 1976 All Ireland Champion in new dance tunes composition, composed this double jig: "Freeman's Tweaked Bluebird," which he plays on his own Freeman tweaked Bluebird.

I don’t have a sample of an Eb Bluebird. The D Bluebird sample is representative, though.

TWEAKED GENERATION Classic Traditional Voicing:

-- Brass Enat (E major) Tweaked Generation = $61.95

I don’t have samples of an Eb tweaked Generation. The Ds in the videos above are representative, however. You can clearly hear the difference in voicing between my tweaked D and the off-the-shelf Generation, and Sean mentions it when he says the off-the-shelf Generation sounds “raspier.”

I’ve voiced my tweaked Generations based on the classic, pre-1980s voicing, which was noticeably purer, more birdlike than current Generations. The video features a bluetop nickel whistle. The difference in sound compared to a redtop brass tweaked Generation will be too subtle to tell from a recording. I would consider that example to be reliable for either brass or nickel tweaked D/Eb Generations.

-- LOW D TWEAKED GENERATION = $99.00 (inquire about international postage rates)

This is a quiet low whistle with comfortable air requirement and a rich, velvety tone. Nicely balanced between octaves. Many have commented that the upper register is especially pleasing.

Hi, Tommy.

The inside diameter of the tweaked low D Generation is .71 inches. That makes it a very narrow bore low D, which is the reason it's quiet in volume, sweet and easy to play in the upper register.

Best wishes,
Jerry

You're welcome, Tommy.

This is the largest tubing that can be used with a tweaked Generation Bb whistlehead. For low F and tenor G it makes a standard bore whistle, but for low D it makes a very narrow bore whistle. I would have liked to have been able to make a louder low D tweaked Generation but with larger tubing the octaves go out of tune with each other.

That's exciting news!

I'm ordering one for sure. I really like your mezzo G with the standard Generation bore, but a bit more oomph in the low notes is always welcome.

Too bad in that clip he never plays any of the low notes.

EDIT: payment sent.

That's music to my ears! I very much prefer that sweet pure easy 2nd octave in the older Generations.

Tell us something.: Can play several instruments at an unimpressive level. Currently most interested in whistling with a side of acoustic guitar.

Jerry, have you ever made a C# whistle?

Also, do your whistles, or any of them, have the empty space in the sides of the mouthpiece filled to effect tuning? Similar to Burkes, MK, Reyburn, and technically Goldie (because the sides are flat so it cant have empty space). I like how those play much more and all my whistles are that style. So I cant play a normal gen or feadogs in tune, they feel too different from all my others, so it throws me off.
