Re: Favorite Aire
My favorite traditional aire would be Down by the Sally Garden.
My Favorite non-traditional aire would be Inner Light from the Star Trek episode of the same name.
Look for the version with Jay Chattaway (the composer) on piano and his young daughter on whistle. Gorgeous!

The Parting Glass. I dont play and/or listen to much trad so I have no idea if thats an air though
I got quite a treat though tonight, I was watching Evelyn (with james bond, i mean pearce brosnan) and there he is singing it he had a half decent voice too. I had no idea there were words that went with it! (any idea were I can find them)

Of all the money that e'er I spent
I've spent it in good company
And all the harm that ever I did
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
If I had money enough to spend
And leisure to sit awhile
There is a fair maid in the town
That sorely has my heart beguiled
Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips
I own she has my heart enthralled
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Oh, all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be with you all

Re: Favourite slow airs
Easter Snow is a lovely tune. I am told that the tune originates from a song, but have been unable to find a recording of a singing performance. Any information on source for that would be most appreciated.lilymaid wrote:I want to learn some new tunes. I really prefer airs and would like to know everyone's favourites..."

My name is Jim, and I have that CD, but it's not yours!Tom Dowling wrote:The tune "Farewell to Glasgow" from the CD "When Junipers Sleep" by????? is a beautiful tune and easily learned right off the CD. I regret that I have forgotten the artist's name, But I'm relatively confident that it is an Irish name. My copy of the CD is on loan to a certain someone (HELLO JIM!!) who borrowed it from me, allegedly as part of his ongoing "Mid-Range D" whistle comparison research.
GoodLuck!!

Anyway, being a whistling guitarist, I like pretty much EVERYTHING on that disc!

Nice tune name, Lee. And thanks.LeeMarsh wrote: Autumn Mountain Met by our own Carol Skinner
There's a painfully beautiful air on the new Tommy Peoples' CD (Waiting for a Call). It's one he wrote, called The Fairest Rose. It's so intense that I almost can't listen to it, but then--as an act of grace--he plays it again, as a hornpipe this time. I heard him do it live last week as well--an unforgettable experience.

I haven't heard of da Auld Resting Chair, but I'll definitely track it down and give it a listen now.
Thanks. Tom
