Simon Thoumire: whistle god

Post by MTGuru »

Who knew that Scottish concertina master Simon Thoumire is also such a great whistle player? In fact, I'm preparing his fantastic setting of "Haste to the Wedding" and "Merry Blacksmith" for my next session, paying special attention to the percussion solos. I may have to substitute Mountain Dew for Irn Bru and Fritos for the crisps. But hey, you know ... America!

Dr. Mierzwiak: Well, technically speaking, the procedure is brain damage.

Then again, yer man could've been expressing his opinion of the practice...

Hi MTGuru

I like this one from many moons ago Simon Thoumire and Jim Sutherland - If I remember correctly it came from the Shetland Sessions (the precursor to the Highland and Transatlantic sessions).

Clare, his wife, is no mean fiddler Set of Polkas.

Thanks Guru! I'm a big fan of Simon Thoumire and seeing the video and following his youtube channel I've discovered that he has just recordered a new album with the guitarist Ian Carr!

BTW, the whistle video is awesome.
Sorry for my bad english...

Just a couple of CD suggestions:

- Simon Thoumire Three "March, Strathspey & Surreal" (Trio: Concertina, guitar and double bass)

- Simon Thoumire and David Milligan "The Big Day In" (Duo: Concertina and piano)
