Tell us something.: I used to be a regular then I took up the bassoon. Bassoons don't have a lot of chiff. Not really, I have always been a drummer, and my C&F years were when I was a little tired of the drums. Now I'm back playing drums. I mist the C&F years, though.

It seems to have dropped off the archives. I think someone may have a recording of it though.

bit of pipe

Post by Eliezer »

The Beeb broadcast it about a year ago. I don't know how long they archive things.

To tell the truth, it was 3 on a scale of 5 -- worth hearing, but you didn't miss anything vital. Best part was hearing Vin Garbutt speak in a way that an American could understand the words.

Coincidentally or not, this was in the WOODENFLUTE list today:
Richard Moon wrote:Whistlers out there should enjoy listening to the BBC radio 4 program "A Bit of Pipe with Six Holes". You can listen on the BBC web site at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/progs/listenagain.shtml

You'll find it listed under B for "Bit of...., A". Well worth a listen.
Here's the BBC blurb ...

A Bit Of Pipe With Six Holes

James Galway plays one of the most expensive of instruments, a golden flute, and one of the cheapest, a bit of tin pipe with six holes. He tells the story of the penny whistle, beginning as a bone pipe in the Stone Age. 40,000 years later came the development of sheet metal and the whistle industry boomed. Despite its association with the rural idyll, our penny whistle is a product of the urban industrial revolution. It went all over the globe, adapting to and influencing musical forms.

And the world's most democratic instrument is still developing. James hears from today's whistle greats - Mary Bergin from Galway, Big Voice Jack, the kwela maestro from Johannesburg, and Vin Garbutt from Teeside.

It's just a bit of pipe with six holes but the penny whistle is important historically, socially, and politically as well as musically. James plays a bit, too.

Cheers

Richard
I just double-checked, it's definitely there.

Great Programme!!!

Post by dolmen »

Yep its definatelly there.... 8)

I spoke to my my mum, who plays the flute and whistle and I put her onto the programme last night. It plays as stated above. :D

I heard this great piece of radio a year ago and it was responsible for turning onto the whistle. Just a few days after listening to the programme I was passing a music shop in Oxford UK and found myself walking in on impule and picking up an Oak D. I not play a Walton's D and enjoying both the musical and therapeutic benefits of the whistle.

Just a note from the programme for anyone in England. One of the Neolythic whistles featured in the programme can be viewed on request at the British Museum Pre-History Dept. Just given them a call.

This BBC programme made me decide to try to play the penny whistle as well :D

Since then I have bought eight whistles.....I'm now currently looking to purchase a higher end whistle although I am struggling to choose one....bewildered is the word.

I listened to it again this time and recognised the odd tune here and there that I can now play......but nowhere as well I hasten to add

Thanks for that - I missed the programme when it was first on and never thought to try the "Listen Again" page, even though that's where I generally get my dose of The Archers
Especially enjoyed the kwela.

Hi, Serp.

RealPlayer is a free download, y'know.

The free version's a little box in the upper right corner.

Just Say NO to Real Player

Post by serpent »

I once d/l-ed RP, and right afterward started getting spam, popups, you name it, to the point where I ultimately just redirected the mailbox I gave them to /dev/null and uninstalled RP. I'm not saying they did it, but the start time was sure suspicious, so I just won't d/l it again.

So if some kind soul can pipe it to a .wav or .mp3 I'd be beholden. Otherwise, guess I'm just SOL.

Thanks,
serpent
