Well I think this one should arouse interest; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Antique-Flute-by-Rudall-Rose-Carte-Co-Charing-Cross-with-Original-Box-No-6510/371509382202?_trksid=p2045573.c100034.m2102&_trkpar
Two Toots
hei, wait…, it’s broken! don’t bid (please!!)
It’s quoted “being sold as broken”. Nothing funny going on here that I can see.
Never mind radcliff, it amused me
A nice one indeed
Yes, looks nice. Nasty crack through embouchure though. Silver keys by the look of it.
Nah, don’t touch it. Rudall, Rose & Carte who? Silver keys (say the claw foot key touches if nothing else)? Routine head crack, readily fixable? Probably made by Wylde? Nah, piece of junk. Fuhgeddit.
Firewood.
The barrel is stamped Rudall Carte & Co. and also the left hand joint, but the right hand joint and foot joint seem to be stamped Rudall Rose & Carte. Any thoughts about this? A mixture of two flutes or normal for the firm to assemble a flute with parts the had available during a crossover period prehaps? In this case a later head and left hand joint with older stamped parts.
I am in agreement with Steampacket on this one, it is probably an instrument that was retailed in the early incarnation of Rudall, Carte and Co, using some old stock left over from Rudall, Rose, Carte & Co, when they were at 20 Charing Cross.
Pulled £1,240. Probably reasonable as on recent showing it ought to be worth c£2k fully restored.
I’m curious about the process of restoring something like this. I know nothing about how it’s done.
Hi Dale. One short (for me) answer to that is: go to my Facebook photo albums and browse through the several flute restoration photo-stories there.
FWIW, based on what’s visible in the eBay photos of this flute, it needs head and barrel cracks fixed, a general clean up, repadding, tenons re-lapping, key buffer corks renewed, probably a new stopper cork and general adjustment and regulation of the keys. If there’s no hidden damage or complications, I’d guess at a restoration bill of c £250 if I did it.
Happy Christmas!
Yes, a normal price these days and a good price from Jem - someone could have a magnificent eight keyed flute to play
