Unknown flutist with unknown accompaniment playing an unknown tune.
His name is Gabriel de Burgo, he lives in Madrid, Spain. The guitar player is José Luis Ruiz Dou. Both of them used to play togehther in a band called ‘Caledonia’ some 7-9 years ago. Gabriel is a very good player, has a great power and entonation. The video was recorded at a session and don’t make justice to Gabriel’s playing, shame.
He currently plays Olwell’s as can be seen in the video. Take notice of the threaded bamboo to sort out a crack.

the second tune he’s playing is Emily’s Reel, same as the one asked about above.
He begins it at the 52-second mark

On youtube – http://tinyurl.com/2sjdvj – you can see how MM keeps his left-hand small finger curled and close to his other fingers-- so that when he presses the long F key or the G# key his finger can just strike out at the key.
Do you think he practiced keeping his little finger in this position? As the son of the son of a flute-player was he perhaps genetically endowed in this fashion?
nah, that’s fairly typical of well-trained flute players.
what’s amazing is his ability to get terrific crans and rolls on the E…and leave his RH pinkey ON THE FLUTE the whole time! Watch it closely, you’ll see it immediately at measure 2 of the opening part.
Now THAT is much more amazing finger control to me.
As you know, our ring finger is our weakest…especially with a fixed pinkey.

if anyone knows the names of the tunes, please let me know.
cheers,
Sara
sound like the first reel is “the cameronian” reel and the last one is “trim the velvet”. i can’t place a name on the middle one though someone else might.
The middle one is the second reel in the set entitled “Meitheamh” on Lunasa’s first album…I think I have the liner notes to that somewhere but can’t find them, so I don’t have the name of that tune. Maybe someone else can find it that way, though.
thanks to cat,
the last reel is “kiss the maid behind the barrel” - i stand corrected
they really should of played “trim the velvet”
So much for the subtle aside …
The 2nd tune is also on “Dervish’s Live in Palma” CD; Track 4 on Disk 1. Oddly, the track is called “Slow Reels” though the first two tunes in the set are slip jigs, and the third tune, the reel in question, is ANYTHING but slow. Anyway, I went and checked Alan Ng’s site and alas, he’s got it as “Untitled.”
And you’re right; they should’ve played “Trim the Velvet.” Would’ve given the flute player a better chance to show off.
Hi all,
just joined but wanted to share this guy
He’s a young (not sure whether Spanish or English or what) man living in Spain, playing really inspired music with his brother accompagnying him on the guitar.

Check out his other stuff, I think he’s really worth while listening to.

i love his line: “compared to pipes, making a flute is easy”
Of course, you can also hear him play the Broken Pledge on WFO3.
