The Commodore - Avast!

“Plays with Herself” might be a better title for Joe.

That kind of flute playing makes me feel as if I’m lying in a bed full of toast crumbs.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that, until you wake up one day and see a giant vat of boiling oil next to the bed and a huge pair of tongs poised above you…

PS That’s not what my kind of flute playing makes you feel like, is it Steve?

PS That’s not what my kind of flute playing makes you feel like, is it Steve? Because I do have a spare set of tongs…

You beat yourself to the punch, John. Must have been distracted by all those Clinch Mountain Boys.

There’s a bit of flute and concertina on my beloved Mulcahys CDs; very nice. Plus, of course, some of the most lovely accordion by The Quiet Man Himself.

At least it’s only toast crumbs and not like, mites or something. Hey, John, did you get that mp3 I sent you? I sent it via your C&F “email” button at the bottom of your posts, but don’t know if that account’s still working. Anyway, it’s a nice version of the Commodore - played on the B/C Paolo by a former professional Bluegrass banjo player.

Be careful what questions you ask, John  (Tongs or/but no tongs)

Okay, Steve. But in formulating your answer do keep in mind that while I’m playing the flute I can’t be playing, talking or typing about concertinas…

Maybe it’s my geeky nature and upbringing, but when I saw the title of the thread I thought it was about something else.

Oh wait, I do - every session I play in seems to have anywhere from 4-7 flutes plus 1 or more accordions.

Best is when we have three or four banjos in the mix too. Ah, the mighty Bethesda sound.

Now, don’t you Yanks go bragging to us Irish-instrument-starved folk out here in the hinterlands.

I mean, at least yer-all’s banjos are probably of the tenor variety.

BTW, The Commodore on an F flute … coooooool.

Yeah, it’s okay I guess. I mean it’s modern and driving and all, but really? Needs more cowbell. We have yet to truly explore the space there, IMHO anyway.

Hey guys. Just had to make a little correction. John, The Commodore isn’t on that first Irish Tradition album (Catchin’ the Tune). It’s not on either of the two Green Linnet records either. you’re probably thinking of that other awesome McComiskey/Mulvihill composition which IS on Catchin’ the Tune: their reel entitled… wait for it… The Irish Tradition.

If you want to make something of it, you know where to find me.

Hey, now that this thread is back …

I am having a ball with this tune. Finally got to play it with Beverly this weekend at our little festival, and oh. What joy. Thank you so much to everyone for the suggestions. My version’s basically staying pretty straight ahead (you can’t fight a Paolo at full throttle), focusing on the bounce + one D roll and a few F# and G rolls where appropriate – and I’m still a bit hazy on the F-nat rolls (my left hand is a moron) and the Hurley/Kerr C Tap at speed (I keep chickening out and opting for a C-CBC triplet instead), but wow. It’s a hoot!

Again, thank you so much for your tips and insights and info on this great tune!!!

Okay, Patrick. But are you sure you just didn’t leave it off the bootleg copy of the album you made for me, and you’re not now just scrambling to cover up your mistake?

Patrick! First post ever! And I’m so honored to have been here to read it.

I might wanna make something of it. Next Tuesday. You know the time and place.

Hey, do y’all play with Martin McCann?

Meet him this past weekend; what a great guy.

I know this isn’t the point of the thread … but after listening to Claire’s version, I think her playing and take on the tune is right on.
What’s modern about her playing to you? Is it her embellishments, her tone, good timeing, tempo, playing in tune, playing cleanly?
I’m not trying to start a flame, but I think what she did has soul and energy and life to it. Hearing people just say oh that’s modern, like it’s a bad thing, kinda bums me out.
