Carbon fiber is quite an expensive material to work with due to the difficult and complicated fabrication process, as opposed to, say, 3D-printed plastic that certain pipemakers produce starter chanters with. That’s what keeps the Carbony pipes out of the “budget” level.
These did catch my eye a while back, as something new and different coming out of the area just a few hours south of me which is well-known for quirky and unconventional approaches to things (i.e. Voodoo Doughnuts, and that guy who goes around on a unicycle in a Darth Vader mask playing Highland pipes that shoot flames out of the drones, and the big annual bicycle ride which is purposely planned for the day with the absolute worst weather). However, I opted for a wooden set, for the aesthetics as well as a feeling of greater connection with tradition (that elusive sense of “authenticity,” however valid that may be). That, and there didn’t seem to be any discussion of the Carbony pipes among the online piping community until this very thread, and it was only very recently that sound samples of the Carbony half set were made available online.
