That's true; the name gives a terminus post quem of 1947 in the case of this particular flute.

Re: ID a flute question

A short trip through Wikipedia tells me this: Pakistan is a portmanteau word in Urdu coined in 1934. So the name itself didn't exist any time before that. The region was known as the Northwestern Region of India. The United Nations Dominion of Pakistan was created in 1947. My guess would be that if ...

Re: block or pin aesthetics

My experience is limited here: Having played Boehm Clockwork oranges in flutes and picollos and when I made my escape to wooden flutes I have played a crappy German pin mounted flute, and a recently acquired six key blackwood copy of an early 1800's R&R with elegantly slender keywork in stylishl...

Re: The flute player IS a bagpipe

Hmmm. Despite the attacks on the messenger, and the style of his message. . .no one addresses the point I made about the deficiencies of the pipes with regard to dynamics. My word, man, your disputation verges on childish. . . . . .

Re: The flute player IS a bagpipe

Any great musician is a great musician because he or she has learnt how to constantly make their instrument interesting, and whether you have a flute or uilleann pipes, or both, you should be looking for that tonal variety...it IS there, whether you have found it or not. Hand your instrument to a g...

:-? Somewhere In the dusty attic of my memory I recall reading someone's thesis that the MacCrimmons of Skye derived their ornaments from the old harping tradition. . . .

Re: The flute player IS a bagpipe

I guess I'll add my blather to this part of the thread :o It's always fun to try to track the influence of the " Auld Alliance " and the developement of the Pastorals, the Northumbrian and Uillean Pipes. In the Scots tradition if you were a Laird of any pretensions to culture you had music...

Re: The flute player IS a bagpipe

I would point out that the largest single difference between pipes and the flute would be the relative absence of any true dynamic range for the pipes. With the Uilleann pipes you can try to artfully simulate a "swell" by the use of the reg's or starting and stopping the drones, but truly ...

Re: Joannie Madden

I notice she is not using a truly 'classical' grip on her right hand. I can't tell if she is using a plateau or open-holed keyed flute. Having had the pleasure of attending a Masters' Class with Jimmy (now Sir James) Galway, I can attest to the fact that a trained embouchure can get any darned sound...

Hi,Jordan. Thank you for the info. Do you know if Tony changed his design when he went to the short foot?

Introduction and Question

Allow me to introduce myself: After way too many years I've gone back to playing the flute, and hacking some ITRAD tunes. After lurking for a while, I bought a Doug Tipple Tunable 'D' flute with the lip plate option and a Tipple-Fajardo wedge. An outstanding instrument  However, since I ha...
