embochure: How relaxed?

Years ago I had lessons from a great flute player who was able to get a great tone from a very relaxed embochure. You could not see any sign of tightening on his mouth, and he pointed out that the space between his lips was almost non-existent, claiming that the air coming out pushed the lips apart ...

Chanter for practice

correct me if I'm wrong: There exists a chanter for practice, recently marketed, in order to learn the fingering of the UP, that is blown through the mouth. The purpose is to learn the fingering. I guess "mouth-blown" is funny, kind of like "bellow blown saxophone"? Is the sarcas...

Making pipes as realistic option for average joe with tools?

I recently visited David Daye's site on making a practice set. Is this a realistic endeavor? If so, is it worth the time, expense etc.? I would like to hear from anyone who has tried it or actually made a set. Thanks, Brian

If you had a $1000, which flute?

Rather than search the archives, I wanted to see the current opinion on this. If you had a $1000, which new flute would you go with? (And the wait times too) I have only tried a Skip Healy, which is excellent, and has no wait time, but I was curious about Cotter, Hamilton,McGee etc. I'm looking for ...

The Hoover narrow bore is very quiet and just great in the high register. Is the traditional bore still on the quiet side?

I would work on the opposite of trying to "build up" the muscles. Experiment with relaxing. You may be surprised at the tone that will come out with a relaxed mouth. Keep the lips together, (keep not press) so that you can't even see a space at all. Then put some pressure on keeping the fl...
