Coconuts

Hi Joseph

I'll bite (the coconuts preferably).

The key shouldn't be D or G but C natural (I take it they are organically grown coconuts). With the tune played on a Cocobolo chanter.

Happy New Year and enjoy your drones and regs when they come.

NTSC versus PAL

Hi DJM I am not sure that this is hardware - it The may be down to the DVD decoding software in your PC - Windows Media player uses the decoding software on your machine - is it PowerDVD or something similar - these are usually preset to the region coding system of the area in which the system was b...

Singing to Pipes

Hi again Talasiga As a percussionist trying to get his head around playing a melody instrument (trying to duck all the bodhran haters out there) I can empathise with you on this. You say you are a flute and whistle player of long standing, then this is likely to mean that if you do end up playing th...

Playing the pipes and singing

Hi Talasiga Don't let them put you off playing the pipes and singing I have heard it done to uilleann, scottish small and border pipes and northumbrian pipes and enjoyed all of the performances. From what you have beeen saying in you4r posts, however, maybe it would be better to get one of your loca...

Rosewood practice chanter

Hi Stacey The rosewood practice chanter would be better than your current one - I bought one (for a laugh I must admit - given the FX rate for the pound against the dollar it was a cheap purchase) and after playng about with various plastic reeds got it to play in tune up to B in the second octave. ...

NPU video

Hi DJM Has the NPU sent you the correct type of disk for the Canada / USA area? It may be that they have supplied you with a region 2 PAL format disk, whereas you would require a region 1 NTSC format disk (assuming that Canada has the same television standard as the US) - If you have a quality TV it...

Bodhran Playing

Hi Steve Interesting post. As a bodhran player I would have a few minor issues with you re playing tunes on the drum as I like doing that - especially when somebody says that it can't be done. I have even heard somebody play a slow air on the drum (a solo effort not screwing up somebody else's air I...

Pipe for singing to

Hi Talasiga Welcome from another newbie. Given what you describe there may be two ways to go 1) Use an uilleann chanter and sing in G - the F E and D notes below G allow you to have notes below the tonic of the tune. 2) Try a pastoral chanter - this will give a note below the tonic as per a highland...

Bodhran

Hi SilverStrand Enjoy playing your drum. I echo what Joseph says, don't let anyone put you off enjoying your instrument. To answer your question - any of the tutor books will give you the basics you need. Other than that what you need to do is pester the local bodhran players (those whose playing yo...

Numpty

Hi peteinmn Numpty basically translates to idiot in the perjorative sense, but with overtones of aggravation - i.e. an idiot that is getting right up your nose. Stacy - right area wrong family - Numquam non Paratus is the clan slogan not the family motto. Hope to see you at Celtic Connectios in Janu...

Alba Bb

Hi Talasiga If you buy the Bb whistle from Alba it will sound tremendous. There is one caveat however, as the lower hand stretch may or may not be possible if you have short fingers. If this is the case for you then buy the Low C instead and you will not be disappointed - this is what I did and it s...

Session places in Glasgow

Hi Uilleanfinlander Welcome to Scotland in February. :) If you are getting tuition in the Piping Centre the best thing for you to do is to ask one of the Piping students from the RSAMD, (Royal Scottish Acadamy of Music and Drama), Traditional Music course. They will point you in the direction of the...

Regulators

Hi Joseph If you mean does he make standard regulators as per normal UPs the answer is yes if you ask him to, but his particular preference is to minimise the number of keys he uses as he thinks that gives greater control over the tuning. If it is the materials used to make the keys then he has to m...

Jim Daily's Pipes

Hi Jay-eye I was one of Jim's students at the Piping Centre (the dunce one) and it was always interesting to see what he pulled out of his bag - it was rarely the same thing twice. He is an inverterate tinkerer with the pipes, always trying out new designs and materials. Actually I do not think he h...
