Re: What type of Gaita is this?

By the shape of the turned parts I would say this is one of the cheaper gaitas that are being produced in great numbers by various makers - however, all of those that I've seen so far were very usable instruments. In earlier years these were equipped with rubber bags, fortunately this seems to be no...

Re: Hummelchen and Bagpipe Questions

As Peter wrote - by "lower second" I meant the full tone below the fundamental. In German it is called "Untersekunde", I unconsciously literally translated this into English.
The range is C-D-E-F-G-A-B-c-d.

Re: Hummelchen and Bagpipe Questions

Soundwise there is not much difference between Smallpipes and Hümmelchen (actually mostly all narrow cylindrical bore double-reeded pipes sound more or less the sme) - it's the range, particularly the missing lower second, that makes the Hümmelchen unsuitable for Scottish music, as Scottish music, b...

Re: Hummelchen and Bagpipe Questions

Hi, first of all, the sopranino Hümmelchen made by Toru Sonoda is a very special instrument, mostly all other Hümmelchen are pitched a fourth lower, with C as the bell note. The Hümmelchen as such is designed for Renaissance music, the range being from c' to d" (c' being the fundamental), finge...

Re: Spanish Gaita Bagpipe - curious to know its make??

Seivane gaitas are probably the best money can buy - wish I had one! But the more budget ones by Sans or Tununtunumba are not bad, either - just not this far superior quality you get from Seivane and a few other top notch makers. In fact, for the price you pay, the quality of these cheaper gaitas is...

Re: A few bagpipe questions

I forgot to mention that the deviations between just and tempered intonation are indeed less noticeable with straight (=cylindrical) bore instruments like Smallpipes, Hümmelchen and the like, than with tapered (=conical) bore instruments, because due to acoustical physics, the cylindrical bore produc...

Re: A few bagpipe questions

The practice pipe from Deiv's website are basically a Hümmelchen in "medieval" design and D minor scale tuning, using the same fingering that the "great" medieval pipe uses, but sounding D minor rather than A minor like the great pipe. As I mentioned before, you do have all the t...

Re: A few bagpipe questions

Just a few answers to your latest questions. I've given up on any thoughts of a chanter that can play several keys. As bagpipes are drone instruments, they are confined to the keys that are harmonic with the drone - that means, the tonic and the fourth, very much like the two comfortably playable ke...

RIP Hans-Jörg Podworny

Dear Friends, unfortunately I have to spread the sad news that our friend Hans-Jörg Podworny has passed on last Sunday. He was well known in this forum for his profound knowledge of piping and pipemaking. Also, in his times of better health, he was a devoted piper and pipemaker as well. Keep him in ...

Re: Help choosing a new whistle

As has been said before, it is very much a matter of personal preference and playing style - there is no "best whistle for everyone". So first of all, your personal preference would need to be worked out, in order to give you any educated advice. What make is the super-heavy, big, and air-...
