Re: Flute ID (or type) from this Iarlaith Mac Gabhann video
Understood :) I was thinking of the closest I can get to it practically (availability and finances both) Yes. Those are important factors. There was been a bit of a rage for Pratten style flutes with a great big "burrrr" in the past 30 years or so but many of the great makers such as Chri...

Re: oiling frequency / dryness
I've soaked flutes for years in an oil bath if needed and saw no ill effects. I use almond oil. It would only gum up if you don't polish it to dry it off. And wiping it down, including running a Qtip around the finger and embouchure holes is part of that process. If you have keys you need to take a ...

Re: Tin whistles in the wind
Has anyone tried a covid face shield? My daughter has a couple distributed from her place of employment. Without a mask for stopping the wearer from spreading virus they are worthless, as the breath ricochets out of the shield and shoots out back and down. I have seen them advertised as mask substit...

The dental floss idea is genius! I've done the thumbnail. knife edge and smooth jawed pliers depending on how loose or tight, but dental floss is going to be in my hand next time,

Re: Flute cloth cases/rolls recommendations
The Vonheunes may seem pricey but they have a good polar fleece inside which gives you some padding for bumps and such, and the illusion that they would help dissipate moisture. I have a three slot for an alto recorder I used with a Rudall style flute. A pratten may require something a tiny bit long...

Re: replacing thread with cork?
I have both corked and threaded flutes and prefer thread. They don't demand that smelly cork grease stuff. And if the threaded joints seem a bit too tight or too loose I can add a little or take off a bit. I never have had to take off any original thread, as my threaded flute seems to have needed ju...

Re: oiling frequency / dryness
The fact that it has survived without cracking for years is a good sign. Do you know where it lived before. A more humid climate could have caused less drying of the wood. And perhaps the flute is responding to your environment more like a new flute will. Also, are you using an oil that CB suggested...

Re: Has anyone tried the McNeela Wild Irish Whistle?
Well there's Meryl Streep doing an Irish accent in Dancing at Lughnasa , based on Friel's play. Apparently she did a good job--I've never seen it. Somebody should make a movie of Translations --it's the great work on colonialism As an American television and film watcher for way too long I've seen ...

Nope. I'd give it a couple of days and see if it continues. Keep us posted.

HaHa. I bet we all have at least one spell check horror story, though few of us will ever be so public. When my kids were in school I had them learn the fresh eyes proofreading method. Proof you paper yourself, then get someone else to read it. Mom, Dad, brother, sister, friend, whomever happened to...

Re: 5 string fiddle
I've only seen one walk in the door in my 30 years of sessioning. That was brought by a old time, folk guy who dabbled in ITM, he dropped in once or twice 10 years ago. He sat next to me and I don't actually remember hearing anything on the C string. On the other hand if you enjoy those notes for ot...

If you are having trouble with a Sindt whistle you should contact him. He is very responsive and if there is something he can do, he will. I have a Sindt C and I do not find it stuffy at all. I use your basic oxxooo.

Re: Has anyone tried the McNeela Wild Irish Whistle?
Also, I haven't gone onto the McNeela site for a long time - is it me, or has it got almost unusable because of the massive number of pop-up adverts? It took me 10 minutes to get to the Wild Irish Whistle because I had to shut down about 2 or 3 adverts per second. It was unbearable. I'll give it a ...

I have no idea on the time frame, but I've heard a Glenn Watson flute played. It stood up well to Olwell Pratten volume.

Re: Buyer Beware - whistle similarities
I don't think the eBay seller knew it wasn't a Sindt. He emailed that he was crying in his beer for his having paid Sindt prices for the whistle when he got it. Best wishes. Steve Yes, and the other whistles he is selling appear to be what they say they are. It was good he was responsive to you and...
