Re: Instrument fashion in Irish music

There is a really interesting discussion here. I found it really informative to read about the sort of development in the tradition and the instruments used. I myself have always been drawn most to the wind instruments. But I tend to think that string instruments are what most people want to learn, ...

Re: "Pan whistle" connecting multiple whistles

Thats very nice. I have seen some other whistle-like instruments, that was a bit like it. But not anything like this. I imagine it is somehing that takes quite some time to get used to. Doesn't it feel like the whistle you are not playing, is in the way and hinder a bit of fingermovement? To quickly...

Re: Playing with backing track

You’ll have to check the specs, but I think iRig can still work. I don’t know what kind of inputs your device has. An aux-in port is about like a headphone input sized hole (the little hole on yours could be for headphones instead, I don’t know). It usually says “aux” right next to the hole. Do you...

Re: Whistle and flute

I think quite many players at some point can play both instruments? I would seem quite logical since the fingering is much the same. Yes the fingering is the same as flute so I can play the whistle, but I'm not a good whistle player. There are differences in technique between the two instruments li...

Re: Playing with backing track

My zoom recorder has an in-put where I can use two large Jacks going into it, and one small in the other end. This may be a "beginners question" :) but is that the same as an aux-in port? It also has a mode where I can use 4 channels at one time. The irig you mention seems like a good conn...

Re: YouTube NON-UILLEANN bagpipes

It seems to be some years ago, there have been made some new posts to this thread.
I will add a new one, with a link to the tune Altera Terra played by Lincoln Hilton.
Dont miss out on this one, it is a very nice performance.

Re: Whistle and flute

Most everything you know from the whistle also works well on flute. Mary Bergin is a great model. I would say that she uses more tongue articulations than most whistle players, and that most flute players use less tonguing. Adding judicious tongue articulations is better than over-doing it. The flu...

I’m sure there are several ways to do this, but I can explain how I’d do this with the things I have on hand, if I were wanting to do so. ... You didn’t mention what you are recording with, but I’m assuming a regular microphone and a PC. Depending on the mic and device, the options may be different...

Playing with backing track

Hello everyone What are you advices for recording a video, were you play along with a backing-track? I was thinking about playing the backing on a separate loudspeaker and adjust the volume to my whistle. But I am not quite sure, that I am happy with that result. I think the quality is not as good a...

Re: Whistle and flute

You have to be careful there with the assumptions. I think you will find a lot of experienced whistlers who will tell you the easiest, and often their preferred choice of instrument, will be the cheap whistle beginners feel that 'works against them'. On the other hand a good few top range flutes re...

Na Piobairi Uilleann's Notes and narratives series has this talk: Fingal and its mummers
Absolutely great. I enjoyed listening to the history and tradition he is talking about.
It is fascinating how everything is connected, yet different.
Thank you very much.
