Great new page, Doug.... I like the way you demonstrate the effect of the dimo. I'm really enjoying my Tipple Dizi and learning new Chinese folk tunes. While I'm mostly an ITRAD player, this has opened up a new variety of music for me. A nice thing about the Tipple too, is that it's almost impossibl...

Hi Doug, glad to hear you've got the flute buzzing. As you play with it more, I think you'll find that embouchure changes can affect the way it plays just as much as adjusting the membrane. Generally, if you blow more across the hole you'll get more "buziness", and if you blow downward and...

Howdy.... trad Chinese tunes are typically written in numeric notation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numeric_notation . Not too difficult to learn, sort of like a numeric version of ABC notation. I have access to quite a few of these tunes, but the titles are all written in Chinese - anybody willing...

There are also a lot of different dimo brands. Some are good, some are not, and they don't look all the same.
Anyone know of an internet source for a good brand? - Tod

Thanks Doc .... not that I'm an isolationist :) , but personally I've had bad experience with shipping products internationally - items lost or damaged, particularly in customs - Tod

The best glues I've found for this, besides the traditional Chinese one made from mule hide, are Titebond Liquid Hide and good old Elmer's. I have never tried gum arabic, but it has the added advantages of being edible and warding off all manner of evil spirits. Garlic juice, of course, has it's own...

Would having a flexible flap of firmer plastic that could be closed down over the membrane make this into a "convertible" flute? Might give you the best of both worlds in one flute. Actually, you can get virtually this same effect just be applying the membrane tightly - you can greatly co...

Hi... Doug made the Dizi for me - it's difficult to find them in keys as low as D and I thought the Tipple would make a good candidate... well it came out even better than I expected. You can adjust the membrane and your embouchure to make the tone anywhere between a standard Tipple to very dizi-lik...

Interestingly, it seems like I see a disproportionate share of postings hear about loose rings that come from Hamilton flute owners.... there are certainly plenty of other makers from Ireland/England and other high humidity climates. Anyone else notice this?

I'll second that.... Williams made great flutes, and with bamboo Olwell's going for almost $400 there's something wrong with this picture - If it were lefty I'd be all over it - Tod
