Re: Which flute keys are the best keys?

... I played a german flute that was post mounted and for obvious reasons it was much more terrible than any of the block mounted flutes from good makers. Not every maker offers both (most don't) so find a flute and flute maker you like first and don't worry about the key style unless you have to.

Re: Which flute keys are the best keys?

... used flute market, where there is a much wider selection of six and eight key flutes. Especially from the "name brand" higher-end flute makers, if that's what you're looking for. It tends to normalize the idea of a six-key flute as a minimum standard. I do agree that more keys means ...

Forbes Delrin & Travel Pouch (Keyless D) SOLD

... Rob Forbes, in the Key of D. Comes with a convenient pouch to transport the flute in (velcro closure). Rob Forbes is in my opinion among very few makers who offer an affordable choice for beginners that sounds how an Irish flute should. I narrowed my list down to Forbes and Somers. Can't go wrong ...

... is the 1000-yard stare and a silly expression. There are still plenty of major scale chanters available as Lawrie, Hardie and many other chanter makers of the time produced them. They all play in Bb (466 Hz) as was the pitch of the time and they can be readily identified because the distance ...

I believe the makers of the short split stock pictured are just saving material to make more money and are clueless as to how the GHB design was evolved and why some ...

Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?

Says the guy who plays bagpipes! Yes, and I only play wood bagpipes because Delrin pipes are much heavier. It doesn't make sense for makers use the same wall-thickness they use for wood, when using a much heavier denser material like Delrin. There is one maker, Roddy MacLellan, who makes ...

Re: Which flute keys are the best keys?

Awesome thanks everyone! This is clear confirmation that I should order a 6 key. Eight should be great but not all makers do eight keys, six seems more of a standard thing now I guess. Thank you for so of your thoughtful and detailed responses!!

Re: How to leard to blow the bag

... around 1990 because Pipe Bands were wanting to play sharper than the chanters currently being made. The pitch desired was rapidly rising, and the makers couldn't keep pace. How rapidly? In the mid-1970s the top bands were playing around Concert B flat, 466 cycles. By the mid-1990s the good bands ...

... would start using similarly short bows  I’ve had a whole bunch of Delrin flutes and the wall thickness varies by maker. Also, some makers of polymer flutes, for reasons I can’t fathom, use a full metal headjoint liner and tuning slide :boggle: which unnecessarily adds to the weight. ...

Re: Delrin flute suggestions for 2024?

All the Delrin/Polypenco flutes I've tried were very heavy, much heavier that the wood flutes I've owned. Are there makers who do a "thinned" Delrin flute? I imagine it would need a raised lip-plate, achieving the same blow-hole depth as a wood or thick-walled Delrin flute, ...

Makers Gomes and Bzowski

Curious if anyone has any experience with wood low whistles from the makers Rui Gomes of Portugal (www.soprosrg.com) or Marek Bzowski of Poland (www.flute.pl)?
