Re: Does an easy-to-play flute lead to a lazy or poorly developed embouchure?

... delight to play. On the other side of the coin, Matt Molloy said in some interview (perhaps one of you will know where to find it) that he had an Olwell which was easier to "fill" than his go-to vintage flute. He said something to the effect that he would set aside the Olwell until he ...

Re: Does an easy-to-play flute lead to a lazy or poorly developed embouchure?

... lazy and you don’t have a poorly developed embouchure for that flute? If your goal is to be able to pick up any flute and play it well…..OK, but Olwell flutes are pretty easy to play and there are plenty of people who have only played an Olwell for many years and they can play anything you hand ...

Re: Does an easy-to-play flute lead to a lazy or poorly developed embouchure?

... And if your first flute is a good flute, you never really “need” another flute unless you started on a keyless and move to a keyed flute. Buy an Olwell, a Copley, or another flute by a maker who consistently makes a great high quality, “easy to play” flute so you know that any issues you may ...

... itself was pretty large, larger than most I've seen. They each played it on their own flutes, one on an antique Rudall and the other a lefty Olwell. It added volume to each flute for sure.

Bb Flute for trade

... lovely tone. I love the sound of Bb flutes but they are really tough on my pre-existing left arm and wrist problems. I own a lighter Boxwood Olwell Bb that is slightly easier on me, so I’m going to stick with that, despite the added maintenance wood flutes require. Before I list the Di Mauro ...

... a day focusing on breath support, embouchure efficiency, projection and power should sort the issue for you. My pitch came up considerably on my Olwell Pratten (necessitating more slide extension) when I consistently worked on this daily, some years ago. Hope this helps.

... "tuned" to the bore and/or flute hole size? One of the first things flute players do when they meet is to swap their flute heads, e.g. Olwell head on a small-bore R&R. I don't know about shape, but size, yes. When a flute is made and tuned, the embouchure size and position contribute ...

... embouchure. Chris Norman commented that it was unusual and that it might have been a special order. The embouchure hole was revoiced by Patrick Olwell, after repairing a crack that went through it, so I don't to what extent it still represents the original size intended by the maker. The embouchure ...

Re: Somers flute blows flat

I don’t recall ever seeing someone playing any Olwell, or most other flutes for that matter, with the slide all the way in (not saying it doesn’t happen) FWIW, I have to play my Peter Noy flute with the slide all the way in before it warms up, and ...

Cracks are definitely an issue with wood, so polymer is stress free. I tend to find, and be told by others, that I sound ...
