Re: Keys for playing in Church
I have yet to play whistles with the praise bands at church, but I play violin or viola every few weeks with them. We have an awesome worship leader and a flexible choir director, so sometimes I'm able to appeal to them for key changes. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of our singers love the ke...

Re: Treatment for WhOA?
I thought being a grad student with very little extra money would do the trick. I was wrong. I've come across some very good deals on this board that are just too good to ignore

Re: Tommy Dion low D whistle
I just received a three piece low d from Tommy yesterday, and I have to echo Jim's sentiments. The only other low d whistles I have are a very beat up Shaw, and one of the "practice" plastic low d whistles by Daniel Bingamon. Both of those have been great for me, but neither can compare to...

Re: The confusing world of mandolin strings
Well, I discovered just how long it takes to put new strings on a mandolin for the first time. Seriously, I could re-string my violin, my viola, and my electric violin in the time it took me to string up my mandolin  Anywho, I put a set of D'Addario J74 on it and I am definitely seeing an imp...

Re: Recycling Musical Instruments & Parts
I bought a violin for $25 one time because I wanted the case and bow for my electric violin. The violin that came with the kit was so useless that I was ready to throw it in the trash. Then I realized it'd be a great autograph item, so I've been getting it signed by my favorite artists. So far, I've...

Re: The confusing world of mandolin strings
It's an American style mando purchased from a local mom and pop music store. I've been playing it pretty regularly for about 3 months now, and it broke at the tuning head while I was tuning it. It was one of the E strings and had gone a little flat. I had noticed it starting to slip more in the past...

Re: The confusing world of mandolin strings
Thanks for the advice! I ordered a set of J-73, J-74, and J-75 to try out some different gauges since they're so darn cheap. Once I get a better idea what I like, I'll probably go for some Elixirs. And no kidding are they cheaper than violin strings. I get 3 sets of mandolin strings for $13 less tha...

The confusing world of mandolin strings
Hi All! I received a mandolin for Christmas and have finally broken my first string. I've played violin for years and know what I like when it comes to violin strings, but I need some direction when looking for new strings for my mandolin. Does anyone have any suggestions? I just play by myself, and...

Re: Playing by ear?
I just wanted to agree with Fiddlerwill. Learning tunes by someone playing it to you phrase by phrase or note by note is exactly how I learned to play violin. It's the basis for a whole set of curriculum called the Suzuki Method. I also agree with everyone's comments about listening to a song over a...

Re: Budget Beginner Fiddle
I'll put a plug in for http://www.gviolins.com/ . I purchased my viola from Jan several years ago and have been VERY satisfied. You can look around his site, but I just e-mailed him what I was looking for and my price range and he went from there. Because of his hunting around a bit, I was able to g...

Re: Give Me Your Best!
Mine happened in Callabasse, Haiti this summer. I was one of about 60 people there to do a day camp for the local kids in the community. Each day, we say about 120 different kids and then we had about 80 people hanging out at an orphanage, which normally houses about 20 people, during the evenings. ...

Re: Horror in Haiti
I've been in contact with some friends who recently retired from working in Haiti. They've been in contact with some people in Petionville, Port au Prince, and Callabasse. They said the damage is unimaginable right now. I know of at least one friend who is missing. haiti911.ning.com is a web site th...

Re: My New Whistle Stand
If I could find a chick who appreciated an itty bitty pipe organ... Someday :) As for the whistles, I'm a newbie myself who has a bad case of WhOA. Plus, board members often post such great deals. Anywho, here's what's in there starting at the back The tallest metal one in the back is a Shaw low D t...

Wow, Daniel! That is a very cool idea.
As far as the tiny keyboard and peddles, I may just have to do that. I can be the Phantom of the Dorm

As for the one on the back right, it's a bamboo NAF made by a somewhat local forrest ranger. It's not great, but it's fun to play around with
