Re: Difference in whistles

Thanks very much for all the feedback. Useful and educational it is and I have learned a lot! Probably going to stay with the Mellow Dog for a while until I gain some proficiency, then give the Trad a go again.

Thanks again.

Difference in whistles

It has been a while since I have been here. I was glad to see I could still sign on. Some time back I bought a new Dixon Trad in D as the research I did here suggested it was a good whistle. I have no doubt that it is, but I always had a problem with a lot of screeching. It sounded like the whistle ...

Re: Absolutely brand new to tin whistle instrument

Being an absolute newbie myself and also drawn to the sound of a low D I came across the Goldfinch site. They offer both a high and a low D made from CPVC. The high D can be ordered from their ebay site but the low D must be ordered from them. The low D comes in under $80 plus shipping and you can l...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

Glenn only wrote that he used "some pretty spacy adhesives" to glue things together. Always a poet. Could that mean CA? Could it mean epoxies? There isn't enough reidue showing on my Weasels to make any determination on that either. Anyone know? I don't mean to always be bringing this up ...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

The wind way height of this darkened by age cpvc whistle is .035'' , half the thickness of the wall. It does not clog and may have something to do with the red plug. The plug has a very noticeable bevel and a recessed dimple machined in the end. There is no chin out. http://i127.photobucket.com/alb...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

I've never had one of his high whistles apart. He did use a concave face on his plugs. And I have never been able to determine what material he used for his plugs. I've been told it was a plastic used to machine prototype parts in the auto industry. Anyone know what the composition of the material ...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

I wouldn't be too concerned about the Gold and Silver pipe brands. Yeah, I know. When I actually make my first functional whistle I was looking forward to leaving the print on the first few, kind of like Glenn did, and there is something official about the black print on the yellow stripe backgroun...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

I never remove any OD on plastic pipe/tube without a mandrel and live tailstock to support it. This makes sense, and a similar thought crossed my mind. I was considering holding the pipe in the chuck with the PVC psuedo collet arrangement with the mandrel - maybe aluminum - held inside the pipe in ...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

I appreciate all the input to this point and the insight gained from it. It's clear that my first task will be to master the art of accurately machining CPVC and there is more involved to it than I originally thought. Not surprising I suppose and I'm looking forward to the learning curve. I'll proba...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

Thanks again for your help, gentlemen. I didn't expect exact measurements as I alluded to in my first post. I realize those are hard-won figures that deserve to remain proprietary. Besides they probably wouldn't work for me anyway. Fortunately I have a copy of Glenn Shultz's article in The Woodwind ...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

Thanks again for you reply and the info therein. Especially thanks for the link. The other guys and gals were right - you make beautiful whistles. My thought about the half and half approach came from observing a picture of an Eb Water Weasel on the Wandering Whilstler archive. The end photo of the ...

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

I trust it's not too late to resurrect this thread with a follow-up post. I've been working on my "waste pile of plastic" here and probably will continue for a few more tries. A couple questions have arisen. I am currently shooting for the wall thickness for the inner and outer parts to be...

Thank you, sir. I look forward to starting on this. I'll let you know how it turns out - maybe a picture or two as well.

Re: Tool bits for turning CPVC

Thanks very much. I have an old Enco 9x20 which should be sufficient for the job. If you don't mind another question, what material do you use for the fipple block? I figure CPVC would be a good choice as solid 1/2" rod is readily available on-line. Will that work or would you suggest another m...

Tool bits for turning CPVC

Good evening. I would like to try my hand at making whistles along the lines of the Water Weasel. I have a metal lathe and can grind tool bits for turning down and boring out steel. I'm curious what the tool needs to look like for turning CPVC. Can someone offer some advice please? Thank you. RVC
