Re: Flute cleaning
I've cleaned and repaired a couple of old flutes, but am by no means an expert. However there are a couple of clarifications you might want to make if you want to get better advice: 1. Is the "green gunk" you are seeing on the wood itself, or the metal tuning slide? If the latter it is lik...

Re: Louder whistle with tapered bore?
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Copeland as a potential "loud" tapered bore whistle.

Re: What's the point of the short F natural key?
If you use a traditional "Rocstro" flute grip the right hand thumb must stay on the flute at all times to keep the flute supported. Wouldn't be available for opening a tonehole.

Re: introduction/a daunting task
In your shoes I'd just play the Irish music on your Boehm flute. Joannie Madden gets a great "Irish" tone on hers, and if you can get 10% of that and a couple of standard ornaments I doubt anyone will care whether you are using a traditional simple system flute. I'd be concentrating on lea...

Re: Blowing machine
If I wanted to construct a device like you describe it would be fairly easy. You need an appropriately sized blower with some form of stable variable speed control (VFD, ECM motor, DC motor with speed control...), duct transitions from the blower outlet down to whistle mouthpiece connection. A lengt...

Re: Tweaking a Pakistan made flute?
As I've previously noted, the keyless one I got was so poorly manufactured that one of the tennons was too large in diameter to go into the associated socket (with all the thread removed). I suppose you could fix this with a lathe (or carefully by sanding), but it does go to illuminate the inconsist...

WTT Delrin Ward keyless Hawkes for Delrin McGee GLP
As noted in the title. I have a Paddy Ward delrin keyless flute in D with a tuning slide, rings and a C natural hole. The flute is in excellent condition, but I've always wanted to try a GLP. The Ward flute comes with a custom padded case. The design is his 3 piece body so is in the following: headj...

Re: Firth flute 6 key demonstration, and Rudolf Tutz
I have a small collection of antiques as well. My favorite two Wm. Hall and Son 6-keys have holes 4 and 5 very similar in size to Terry's GLP (they measure slightly oval with my calipers so can't be exactly sure). After family, those are the two things I'd run into the burning house to save...

For what it is worth, I have two of his keyless flutes, and they are excellent.

I use a version of a flute flag: graphite tube from a sport kite build leftover (arrow shafts...) and a piece of microfiber glued and sewn on. Here is an original: https://www.flutacious.com/Accessories-Flute-Flag-TD

Re: Ebay Sales Rant...semi-franken flute
Well, I've got (2) 6-key W. Hall and Son's flutes (one with Brooklyn, NY stamps) and both with silver keywork and fittings that appear to be grenadilla or cocus. My rings are narrower and both have a raised central ridge that, at least to my eyes looks a bit more elegant than the bands in the e-bay ...

Re: Basic flute care question from a beginner
Welcome to the challenging world of antique flute care. I can tell you what I do, and hope that my method works for you. I always keep my flute sections disassembled when I'm not playing the flute for more than 45 minutes or so (depending on ambient humidity). I swab ever time I finish playing for a...

Re: having some issues with Walt Sweet Onyx low D
Walt Sweet Onyx is a completely different animal from the older Ralph Sweet low D whistle. I have an Onyx and have absolutely no issues with the second octave when I am careful to be sure to cover the toneholes carefully (more critical in the second octave than the first in my limited experience). O...
