Re: fluteplayer michael king on rte nov2008 program

That is certainly beautiful playing. Great lift, pure tone, no tension.

Thanks for sending us flutewards.

Re: Lower lip and embouchure

A person who is to offer advice on what sort of embouchure would work best for anyone and everyone else has to have:
1) Tried all flutes in existence
2) Tried all sets of lips in existence
Does kissing count? Then I'm half-way there....

Re: Embouchure: how to, and why to...

I'll bet anything that this kid hasn't read this discussion, wouldn't understand it if he did, and spends more time playing the flute than talking about it.

Re: Embouchure: how to, and why to...

I really don't mean to be confronting anybody and I'm sure this issue has been raised before. But only Henke shows that he knows anything at all about making a good embouchure. Everybody else is just talking about it. Including me - except I won't even try to talk about it because I don't know how t...

Re: Boxwood 2008 - "...celebrating... the music of the flute."

It isn't just an emphasis on flutes. That's a huge focus of the week. It's why it's called "Boxwood." "...celebrating and sharing the music of the flute." [However] While the week in Lunenburg emphasizes the flutes, whistles, and recorders and their musical traditions, the festiv...

Review: Hammy's "Wooden Flute Maintenance"

I was recently given Hammy Hamilton's new DVD, "Wooden Flute Maintenance: a practical guide to basic care." It was a great pre-Christmas present. My partner surprised me with it. Hammy posted that he had made this a few weeks ago- the post is further down. I really like the DVD and the bas...

Re: Finger fumblers

I can honestly say that I am never tripped up by a tune. My fingers never fumble... unless I am playing faster than I ought to. If I take my time and I think about the music and the tone and I pay attention to my phrasing rather than to playing fast, then I never fumble or make a mistake. So really ...

Will cocus still be available in years to come? When I got my keyless Olwell a few years ago Mr. Olwell told me that cocus was getting very hard to find (2003). And he lets the wood season for several years. I bet after waiting six to eight years a flute like that would cost almost as much anyways. ...

"...it's not the way things are supposed to be written." But why not? My kids use those expression a lot. I don't use them, but I know what they mean. It's just slang and after a while slang become part of common parlance which then becomes accepted on "higher" levels of discours...

My first post! But I've been lurking for a while.
I thought that a flute can sound loud to the person playing it but not necessarily loud to somebody else. Is this true do you think?
