Re: happy tunes for beginners

If we hadn't any women in the world. You can find it at sessions.org and here:

http://homepage.tinet.ie/~hammie/Musk.mp3 (followed by another tune I'm not sure of the name)

Play it with bounce. It's a happy tune, a barndance, I believe.

Somebody told me it meant "mists," as in foggy mists.

Re: CP: Switzerland: Basler Tattoo and workshops

I enjoyed listening to what I could listen to. My internet connection is a bit dodgy. Nice music. Thanks and good luck.

Re: Hard case for Ralph Sweet's keyless Irish maple flutes in C?

Bring it to a wood worker and get them to make a case for it, or make one yourself if you have the know-how. I made one for a low whistle out of a length of poplar, cut in half lengthwise and routed out with a router. A couple of hinges and a clasp, and your done, maybe a little felt inside for cush...

Re: Most Popular session Whistle in Ireland

The last session I went to there were three Sindt whistles at the session, including mine. This was a session made up of a younger crowd, many from University of Limerick studying ITM.

Re: Taps

Trotting to Larne is a slip jig, yes. Session.org has it in Amajor. I learned it in D.

http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/3511

It's a fun tune.

Re: Taps

Here's Trotting to Larne that I learned from John Skelton which has taps that give the tune a bouncy feel:

A2f A2f fed | A2f A2f fed | B2d G2B ..... tapping the G for A2f and the A for B2d, etc.

I wouldn't say this is done a lot, though.

Re: Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I recently bought a roll up flute case and haven't put the paper towel in there. I should probably do that just so I have the option of swabbing. Cut out the middle man. Just carry a roll of paper towels with you, and store the flute inside the center cardboard tube. Flute case and flute swab all i...

Re: Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Now that I think about it, up until recently, I always stored my flute in a wooden box that I made myself, and I always carried a paper towel (kitchen towel I think they're called in Ireland)... anyways, a kitchen towel rolled up loosely and used it to swab my flute after lengthy playing. Roll it up...

Re: Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I hesitate to share this, but here it goes. I haven't swabbed my flute out in years. That is, I only swab when I'm oiling my flute. Otherwise, I shake the moisture out or tap it on my leg and shake it lightly over my leg. No swabbing after playing.

There I said it. I feel better now.

Re: Cillian O'Briain low d: I like it.

How long did it take you to learn that piece??? Thanks everyone for the positive comments. I'd guess it took a week to learn each tune and several weeks to get it all up to speed. I don't know the name of the first tune. Second tune is Lost and Found (Castlebar Races, etc.) The third tune is Hag at...

Re: Pointing in the right direction

too weak :D practice long tones while moving up and down the harmonics it is a good exercise for developing strength, flexibility and control (okay....some ITM players would leave out the flexibility part :poke: ) I'm a little weak when it comes to playing third octaves. I've never figured out othe...

Re: Pointing in the right direction

...AND to get proper notes of the third octave you have to change fingering... i don't think you should bother right now... Yes, I agree. Don't concern yourself right now with proper notes in the third octave, but just know if you happen to hit a note above second octave, it could be a harmonic not...

Re: Pointing in the right direction

Man, I didn't know one could go past the third octave. How do you do that? You "just" use tighter embouchure, more airflow and direct the airstream even more upwards? I'm not so sure I'm good at describing how to do it. I'd just keep working on what you're doing and you're upper octaves w...
