Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff

He pronounces it really clearly, in the way that everybody here in the UK pronounces it: "wor-ter". Me saying "wor-ter" isn't how I say "water". I say it the way I would say "waugh-ter" (as in Evelyn - not waf-ter)) However, I don't think that gets us anywher...

Re: Blowing machine

My main conclusion from peering at shiny blades down shiny windways is that some sort of setup with two different coloured background above and beyond the head would help identify the what I am looking at . Also some sort of optical bench-like setup for viewing consistently. However, my Old (? 1970)...

Re: Blowing machine

So, is it the case that, in the past, everyone has been relying on pressure-at-the-beak measurements, because they imitate what we do by mouth, and are easy to take. But that measured pressure cannot really be taken as the pressure drop across the length of the windway, as you'd need to subtract th...

Re: Blowing machine

I don't see any way to blame that drop in pressure on the flowmeter. Neither do I. If the pressure is seen to drop it doesn't matter whether any change on the flowmeter was noticeable or not. If Terry tweaked the regulator to bring the pressure back to what it was without the tube we may then notic...

Re: Blowing machine

I am looking at the recorder data and wondering what the characteristics are of the departure from the 'flow proportional to square root of pressure' relationship that Bernoulli and losses in the windway would predict. Ignoring the zero points and the 3 Pa point for the bass recorder it looks like a...

Re: Blowing machine

Looks like blowing machines for air reed research is a long story. My distraction into flute acoustics led me - via Terry's web site - to John Gunn "Art of Playing the German Flute" c.1793 where we find: Hence it will follow, that whatever additional acutenefs any found may acquire, muft b...

Re: Blowing machine

How did you get these numbers? Scaled the image of Fig 6 into CAD software, clicked a point onto the symbols for each recorder and exported the coordinates. Unless I've got my units wrong the resistance is a lot higher than the D whistles. I guess that could be for genres of music with longer phras...

Re: Blowing machine

Here's hoping Tunborough hasn't already done this. Blowing pressure and flow for a consort of recorders. Data from Blanc and others 2010. Above 25 Pa (~2.5mm H2O) there is a pretty good square law relationship, with some departures that may be of interest. Excluding the zero point straight line fits...

Re: Blowing machine

Figure 6 makes me squirm; if I'm reading it right, it suggests our square-law relationship isn't perfect and breaks down entirely at low flows. I eyeballed a few points on one of the lines and its not too bad away from low levels. They do say "When the mouth pressure increases, the flow tends t...

@ Tunborough. Thanks. I was adding the last paragraph, indicated **, to my post above as you were posting.

Re: Blowing machine

I haven't been plotting the numbers because I haven't been keeping track of the changes to the setup and I am not sure what factor Tunborough has successfully incorporated into his model. My thoughts are: - If measurements between 5 l/min and 20 l/min are enough for the derive the model just use one...

Is all the calibrators giving the same Ke? So you have the pressure loss down a calibrator modelled adequately? I may have missed that earlier.

Re: Why One Key?

Several flute players who use 'original' instruments for music from the 18th and 19th centuries illustrate the progression of flutes over the period on youtube. Here is one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptQJdIv2uUI If you are lucky youtube may offer to others after it. More info here: http://www....

Re: Blowing machine

I have rewritten this post. How about this summary? The pressure difference between left and right is due to energy lost to friction. Near the orifice there is an additional pressure loss due to kinetic energy. So the graph will be an irregular descent from the left to right pressures with a dip due...

Re: Blowing machine

Hey - progress! Those experiments clear some of the bafflement. Up thread I wondered if adding a tube downstream could reduce drag. I found this: "To avoid undue aerodynamic drag, a Venturi tube typically has an entry cone of 30 degrees and an exit cone of 5 degrees." <snip> "Venturi ...
