Re: “F” flute makers?

I have two keylesses, one by Hammy which is great, though I think he is still not taking new orders? And one by Sweetheart (Ralph or Walt, I am not sure?) which is very good too considering that it cost a quarter of what the Hammy did. (I am looking to sell the Sweet one if anyone is interested.) Bo...

Re: What's the point of the short F natural key?

Regarding RH thumb hole. From playing various bagpipes with a RH thumb hole, the position of the thumb hole along the axis of the flute already requires a - for me - uncomfortable repositioning of the thumb from where I would naturally have it. I can only imagine that being more of a problem with a ...

Re: Regarding the low d Note

One other thing to consider is that we often hold the flute differently for the low D than for the other notes. I noticed with my playing that everything was strong except the low D. In my case it turned out that removing the right pinky from the EFlat key when playing D was shifting a major element...

Re: Hinges and clasps for flute case.

spry.co.uk seem to be a reseller for the Maissenbacher products. The pictures are straight out of the Maissenbacher catalogue anyway. Anyone in the UK should probably use them.

Re: Hinges and clasps for flute case.

Sorry to dezombie this thread... I just found out that Gebr. Maissenbacher do still exist post corona and have ordered their latest catalog. Is anyone interested in ordering hinges and catches for flute cases and would want to participate in a shared order? Dispatch outside the EU could be an issue ...

Re: reaming

Thank you for that video link too - seeing Hammy at that age and making flutes is lovely.

Re: Schäferpfeife/Cornemuse du midi

[Thread revival. - Mod] Wow, I didn't realise this topic reawoke after my last response! To round out my story, I ended up buying bellows blown Schäferpfeife in G/C from Mathis Branschke after having a student set of his on hire for a while first. The set I bought has keys for the lowest notes, bas...

Recommendations for bellows Pipes in A

Hi, as discussed in my last topic, I am looking to acquire some new bellows pipes in A with Scottish or French half-closed fingering. (Not SSP - I already have some of them.) So, recommendations please; I have looked at the Jon Swayne Border Pipes and to be honest, pre-brexit, I would have just orde...

Garvie Session pipes swap for Bellows pipes?

Hi, a refugee from the flute board here, though I also play pipes. I have and play GHB, Scottish Smallpipes and a German Schäfferpfeife. I also own a rarely played set of Garvie Session pipes which are lovely, but they get neglected due to time issues. It would simplify my life and playing if I coul...

Re: in praise of the all-wood flute

I have a two part Casey Burns folk flute in Mopane. It really is just a two part stick with a whisky bottle top as an end cap. The functional "cork" is a bit of thread wound wood. It has a very lovely minimalistic ethic to it and sounds good too. I need it about a quarter inch out to play ...

Flute in WWI

In this video about Passchendaele at 0m45s you can see troops marching led by a band playing flutes . They look like F flutes to me. This is a British Army unit, so who were these troops likely to have been? Did non-Irish formations also use the flute marching band format back then or would this be ...

Re: F Flute

I have a lovely one from Hammy, but he is not taking orders. I also have a (Ralph or Walt?) Sweet one (available for sale...) which is nice too, though I like the Hammy more. The difference in price is reflected in their quality.

Re: Keyed flute advice

If this is an interim thing then even 10 months is a long time to wait. Have a look at the used market - there is bound to be at least one decent keyed flute out there, which is all you need to start getting used to the keys. You are not agonising about finding "your" flute for eternity - ...

flutemakers list?

Having finally given in and bought a lathe - a pretty simple one for now, for other purposes (carving tool handles i.a.) - the thoughts turn naturally to trying to make a basic flute. I saw Terry's flute plans on his website and I may buy them. He also (on the web site) recommended a flutemakers mai...

Re: Sudden embouchure problems on lower notes

Several flutes could develop problems simultaneously if the are all exposed to the same sudden change in conditions, e.g. moving to a cold place with central heating. But I agree that it is the less likely cause. I recently had a problem with my low D on my keyed flute which I eventually tracked dow...
