Re: Removing excessive wind noise from recordings?
Yes, play at an angle, but also be aware that it might be better with something like an SM-57 or SM-58 (also played at an angle). You basically don't want to blow straight into the microphone, and in my experience of both studio recordings and live performance, it's easier to get a clean sound with ...

Re: Gradual drop at the end : how to do it?
I'm sure someone will come along with some better pedagogy, but yes, it's about pressure. If you think about it, if you blow too strongly into your whistle, it will rise in pitch. If you blow weakly, the note you're trying to play will be flat. For this effect, you want to achieve a gradual flatteni...

Re: Gradual drop at the end : how to do it?
Hi there, For me, it's simply a drop in air pressure, from the pressure required to play the specific note preceding the drop. The gradual but rapid drop in pressure will make the note flatter, resulting in the "curved" effect you describe. Try it up the scale, beginning on the lowest note...

Re: Are pipemakers dwindling again?
Can't speak to slowing down, but there are a few makers in Australia making pipes right now (with queues of 1-2 years). David Goldsworthy in Brisbane makes a lovely set of pipes, and there's also Jack Brennan in SA. Ian McKenzie (Blue Mountains) is retired I believe, but he's still around, and Sydne...

Re: Best method for Recording whistle at home
I've had pretty good results with an SM57 and 58, aiming the fipple at an angle from the mic. I did a quick recording ( https://youtu.be/VBsoyk5gCH0 ) just to demonstrate the sound of a Goldie High D a couple of years ago, through an SM57 (I like to think my playing has improved a lot since then, bu...

Re: Low D Grip Questions
Right now I'm still not sure what I want to use, and am kind of thinking it's going to be a matter of, do I want to do a ton of intricate slides and half notes on the whistle, a la Brian Finnegan or do I want to be super fast with ornaments a la Órlaith McAuliffe (my other fave whistler). Those are...

Re: Where have you taken your whistle?
I played Sliabh na mBan on my Burke in the midst of the seemingly endless expanse of the Blue Mountains last year. No-one around for miles except for two good friends. That was pretty damn special (also, hi Greenfire, this is Pwllkin from the Other Place).

Re: Chip and Fiffle
It's all back-to-front anyway; in terms of sound production, the fipple comes before the chiff! But, yes, I agree with Nano and Tunborough; it's not obviously a joke, but it's a bad own goal if it's meant to be one. I just want to know whether whistle fiffle is the same as the original pipe...

Re: Recommendations for 'stepping up' in whistle quality
The Killarney is a great whistle, well worth its (comparatively) low price. At around 50 dollars more than your budget, Burke whistles are amazing. But I really don't think you could go wrong with a Killarney. For background, my first fancy whistle was a Goldie, followed 10 years later by a Killarne...

Re: Getting a new whistle - what key?
Well! Obviously, you can't allow a whistle roll to have empty slots! That's why you need to obtain more whistles! It's simply mathematics! More whistles : more rolls :: more rolls : more whistles! And the world is found to be in balance. You can't argue with the sciences I guess. More whistles it is!

Re: Getting a new whistle - what key?
Ah! Might I suggest you simply obtain a nice low whistle pouch or roll? A roll, preferably, so you can fill up the entire low octave! And please don't neglect the bass or the wee high octaves! That, kind stranger, is called enabling, and is a serious offence. This is the very reason I've never gone...

Re: Getting a new whistle - what key?
Thank you all for your input! I agree that I eventually need to get whistles in every key ( :D ), and much as I'd love to get a low whistle, I need to take baby steps for the sake of sanity (and stick to whistles that fit in my bag...). Especially considering the fact I just got on a two-year waitin...

Re: Getting a new whistle - what key?
Well, here's the pros & cons: D: pros: you love the whistle make and the sound // you use it all the time || no cons -- don't buy another high d this time around (save that for later!!) C: pros: you have one that you like || cons: you don't use it much -- I'd say don't buy a c this time around ...

Getting a new whistle - what key?
Hi there, So I've decided to treat myself to a new Burke whistle in the next few weeks. I got my first Burke high D a few months back, and I absolutely love it. Now, here's the "conundrum" (a luxury problem more like). I play in weekly sessions with a bit of singing, so I use my Killarney ...
