Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
I don't see why this would be surprising, given what you posted earlier about hole size. Because I've played whistles from Bass A to High F, and especially spent years evaluating dozens of makes of Low Ds, and I've found that the relationship between the octaves, be it in tune, or too narrow, or to...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
What's strange is to have E, F#, A, and B give true octaves but for there to be a clear pitch differential between the octaves on the single note G. Is that how your Kerry Busker is tuned? Generally with whistles what's good for the goose is good for the gander, at least with the notes emitting thro...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
A Low Whistle which has relatively thick walls (as aluminium whistles go) has walls much thinner than a traditional wooden flute, still not thick enough to have much of a chimney. I think the thickest walls I've had on a Low Whistle were the plastic Susato ones. Keep in mind that Baroque flutes, whi...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Thanks for the advice! The only issue is that only second octave G is sharp - and only about 10 cents sharp. First octave G is, if anything, slightly flat (I have to really blow hard to bring it into tune), so I don't want to make it flatter than it is. So your whistle has a problem with the octave...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Not to open this can of worms again, and I’m sure you’ve already checked this, but when you say a “flat F#,” is it flatter than what would be expected in just intonation? Even the whistle isn’t fully tuned that way, I’ve found that many have that flatter/sweeter major 3rd. Since I used to do a lot ...

Re: Aluminum whistle modifications
Mainly a flat F#. But high G is a tiny bit sharp already, so I want to sharpen F# (especially in the first octave) without sharpening second-octave G at all. Assuming it's a D whistle, and working under the assumption that the octaves are true, and setting aside the C#/Cnat issue, is this what you ...

What's wrong with the whistle? It might be a very easy fix.Cyberknight wrote: ↑Mon Oct 28, 2024 12:29 pm Does anyone know a maker in the USA that is willing to modify aluminum whistles, either by slightly altering hole sizes or adding undercutting?

...if someone disfigured my work and rendered it unplayable... Yes I suppose that's a real possibility if somebody doesn't know what they're doing. But I've had to modify many whistles over the years because they simply weren't tuned well as they came. It's strange, but even makers of high reputati...

Re: fs: Bass A Colin Goldie Overton Whistle
It's quite a coincidence that a whistle just like this was on Ebay a week ago, considering how rare these are.
It was being sold, as I recall, by somebody who used to be a familiar face here.

Re: Duty and customs fees, IRL to UK
Pardon an ignorant American butting in but with all those issues why not pick up the flute in person?
The distance from London to Dublin is shorter than the distance I drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco to pick up a flute.

Re: Cork adjustment for tuning between registers
I don't know if it's widely done, but I always used the note G for the setting of the cork. It's not just tuning, at least on my old flute: when the cork is at exactly the right spot I can play G in the low octave, then steadily introduce more 2nd octave G into the tone, until the tone is a 50/50 bl...

Re: WTB Casey Burns Folk Flute in D
Cool that they're getting those. Will those be the last Casey Burns flutes on the new-instrument market?
He's a brilliant maker whose flutes filled a unique niche in the market.
BTW Casey as we know offered a number of finger-hole size and placement configurations. How will those two be configured?

Re: Adjusting frequency spectrum with reedmaking
From what I've read (I'm not a pipemaker) in reed instruments in general and bagpipes in particular you get a brighter (more higher harmonics) tone with a wider cone, that is, a greater difference between the narrowest and widest parts of the bore. The narrower the cone, that is, the closer the bore...

Re: Question about lip placement?
Yes, use your ears. When I started (no teacher) I just kept trying various lip-opening shapes, covering the blow-hole with various amounts of lower lip, and blowing into the blow-hole at various angles. Whatever gave the purer, more focused sound I took note of and tried to replicate it as I went fo...

Re: Critical Mass.
I firmly believe it would be of great help to all that pipe, bag, bellow, chanter and reed maintenance be included in all Tionol's. I think it would be helpful, especially for those of us who are far removed from makers nearby - to include classes to help with maintenance and troubleshooting. I've ...
