Re: Getting to G minor
Gm is quite accessible on a fully keyed simple system flute, allowing for a bit of work.... : When the Tide Comes In or Factory Smoke - Geo. Rudall (Willis fecit) 8-key flute https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10159921206419271&id=605989270 The Drunken Sailor Hornpipe - R&R...

R Croger flute restored!
Thread revival! So, with major blushes over how long it has taken :really: :poke: :waah: , I have at long last completed the restoration of Ben's R Croger flute and it's back with him. I've posted a YT demo video: https://youtu.be/RKVVasBPIgE. I haven't posted a full photo set about it anywhere, bu...

Re: 7 headjoint comparison on a Rudall Carte Ebonite Böhm fl
Just a couple of further points of information responding to Terry's thoughts: The thinned cocuswood head was made in 1929. The other RC heads are all C19th or at least pre WW1. The thinned RC heads probably actually have shallower embouchure chimneys than the plain, full thickness heads because the...

Re: 7 headjoint comparison on a Rudall Carte Ebonite Böhm fl
Apart from materials and wall thicknesses, the significant differences would be varying embouchure chimney volumes, undercuts and sharpness or otherwise of hole rims Surely there's too much different here to make this any more than a comparison of different head joints on the same flute where mater...

That might just be my embouchure going off!BigDavy wrote:Hi Jem
I liked headjoints 1 and 2 best, the others sounded a bit thinner in tone.

7 headjoint comparison on a Rudall Carte Ebonite Böhm flute
This (https://youtu.be/Bjw21oedXi0) is a light-hearted venture into the perpetual vexed discussion about the influence of materials on flute tone qualities. It doesn't pretend to be "scientific", just a comparative demonstration for folk to make their own observations. I deliberately restr...

Re: Cork vs threaded joints
No original baroque flute would have had anything other than thread-lapped tenons. It's fairly unlikely any modern copy by a reputable maker would either. If you own flutes by living makers the best thing to do is to enquire for their advice if you are considering changing to cork lappings. The job ...

Re: Jem's Flute Embouchure help sheet updated
Different embouchure hole cuts/designs, reasons for, apart from simple energy conversion efficiency: human anatomical variability; variations in human technique; variable effects of design on tone quality and individual human taste therein; effects of design on "resistance", "flexibil...

Re: Jem's Flute Embouchure help sheet updated
I think that's an excellent summary, Conical bore, (except perhaps for the phrase "air split across the embouchure hole", which isn't what happens) and it explains quite nicely why "fill" is the wrong and IMO an unhelpful concept/term. No-one is disputing that some flutes may see...

As Kevin says, it's long keys rather than long notes.

Re: Jem's Flute Embouchure help sheet updated
tstermitz, some air definitely does pass through the flute and a slight draught can be observed (candle flame?) at open tone-holes and the foot end. But the amount passing through the tube is definitely not the full amount projected by the player, probably rarely as much as half the total, and in an...

Re: Jem's Flute Embouchure help sheet updated
cac, well, I'm hardly young (61 and closer to 62) and distinctly unfit. I agree that age and fitness affect lung capacity and ability to support physical exertion of any kind. But that doesn't undermine anything I wrote. Even if more of the blown air-stream enters the tube than doesn't (and varying ...

Jem's Flute Embouchure help sheet updated
I've just made an addition (new section - "Filling" a flute) to my Flute Embouchure help sheet document. Folk who already have it or have found it helpful in the past may wish to view or download the updated version and it might be of interest/use to those who don't already know it (same o...
