Re: Flute Playing and Health?

Adding to Nanohedron's tale of using his flute as a "peanut" shooter, we were celebrating a fellow flute player's 60th birthday with a house session. When the birthday cake came out loaded with candles alight (plenty, but not 60) he covered all the tone holes and the embouchure of his flut...

FS: Killarney Nickel "D"

Brand new Killarney whistle, Nickel, Key of "D". $85 includes shipping. N. America buyer preferred. Great whistle, but my preference is a Reyburn, so I'm hoping pass the Killarney on.

Re: It made me go hmmmmmm...

I have a friend who owns an M&E flute, but she doesn't play it because she can't ever get the low D to play very loudly. Another mutual friend who plays flute put the foot joint of his Morvane flute on the M&E, and Bingo! It changed the whole tone of the flute. His take was that the larger o...

Re: Why are these flutes so expensive, and should I buy off ebay

I'm surprised no one has recommended having a look at Jem Moore's excellent documentary on Patrick Olwell, which graphically illustrates the time and hard-earned skills involved in making a proper flute.

Since you are as appreciative of your Olwell as every owner is, you might be interested in the recent documentary on Patrick and Aaron

Re: Fully lined headjoint and Oiling Question

Patrick Olwell advised me to periodically soak a Q-tip with oil and apply it to the "chimney" of the embouchure as well as the chimneys of the tone holes, and then remove the excess with the dry end of the Q-tip.

First, retire. Then you'll have more time for the hockey AND the Olwell. I know how hockey is though. I had a friend who drove 150 miles one way after work on a weekday to play in a hockey league, and back in time for work the next day. He didn't play the flute though.

I agree with Akiba. I don't know Jack Gilder that well, but I suspect the management of the Plough and Stars realizes that the value of having the man around goes a bit beyond his musical talents. I'm not one to fear trouble, but whenever I'm in the neighborhood 'twouldn't be the safe haven, but rat...

Re: When to take it to a sesh?

Sadly, I fell into the category of player of which Brad speaks: I wanted to be part of a session more than taking the time to properly learn the music and the instrument. And it has taken many years, after realizing my mistake, to undo the bad habits. If you're in it for the long haul, take Brad's a...

Bellows Repair Tape

I have a Honer Double-Ray Black Dot box and the bellows tape is wearing through. "A stitch in time saves nine", leads me to seek repair tape. The color is "gold". Does anyone know a source?
