Re: Survey: Watches

I wear an analog wristwatch. Digital was too stressful... sometimes you don't want to see the exact numbers, but just the relative passing of time. I got tired of using my cell phone. I believe time is important and like being able to stay on top of it. It helps me make time for things that are impo...

Re: Using a traditional Flute case.....

Ben, I don't have pictures of my case, but I modified an old Pro Tec case, similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/Protec-MX308BX-Flute-Case-Foot/dp/B002AEMUJI/ref=sr_1_6?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1417730535&sr=1-6&keywords=pro+tec . Basically, I took out the fabric lining...

Re: Wet pads and their care

your pads will be fine, as they are designed to withstand such stress. some day, however, they will need to be replaced. think in terms of years or decades for this, rather than months. there is also no need to clean the pads every time you play. on the other hand, if they start to stick or make noi...

Re: Matt Molloy VS. Mike McGoldrick

definitely the player, not the flute. molloy has at various points played rudalls and prattens and he always sounds distinctive. sure the sound may be a bit different between them, but i would say that he has always had the sort of things (strangely) denigrated here. i think the key thing here is wh...

Re: Should a flute player double on penny whistle?

i have been playing the flute for so long that practicing the whistle is pretty much like practicing the flute for me, but i'm probably the exception. 15 year old me was pretty smart, ditching class and spending 3-5 hours a day on flute embouchure and tone,. nowadays i only play flute on ...

Re: Flute Tuning problems

a flute that is extremely out of tune with itself but played impeccably in tune by it's owner and ergo, in tune with itself :-? in this case i would say that chris norman plays it in tune, but your point is well taken, :D. do check out the tuning chart that terry created for the flute and listen to...

Re: Flute Tuning problems

What the flutes concern, I have a Martin Doyle flute with keyes made by Maurice Reviol and an eight keyed grinter (one year old). I like these flutes very much and I wouldn't dream of moving corks on either one of the flutes because I know that these makers deliver them in good nick with the cork i...

Re: To thumbhole or not to thumbhole - that is the question!

Isn't having only 6 holes in the whistle a completely arbitrary decision? Not exactly. It's pretty darned well thought out based on the prevalent major scale used for most music in Western cultures. So it is not at all arbitrary. And it is far from the only instrument with such a tuning scheme. Tha...

Re: To thumbhole or not to thumbhole - that is the question!

I play with a c thumbhole and wouldn't have it any other way. It is more in tune, has a better tone, is easier to play, and I can do more things tonally and with ornamentation. My Burke whistle has a thumb hole and so does my tweaked Freeman Generation (thanks, Jerry!). I don't really buy the tradit...

Re: I bought a used burke...

Eskin, I'll put something together when I'm back home... Madman, I was thinking it was quite probably me but a little confirmation goes a long way. I've been playing a tony dixon tunable d with an aluminium body the past 3 years - it slides into the second octave with no effort at all, which might ...

Re: Four keys for nine fingers?

So (thread revival alert!)... thirteen months, much discussion/experimentation (producing the keyless Delrin special that spawned the Flute for the Undecided ) and one personal meeting later, Dave Copley is currently building me (guess what?) a four-keyed flute. But a four-keyed flute like no other...

Re: best cheap whistles to buy for a new club

Thanks for the recommendation on the Clarkes, but I need tunable, and I don't have enough experience with conical whistles to confidently proceed. I play concertina, which is not easily tuned, and am going to be leading on that as it is LOUD. It might be good to pick one up for fun, and to show them...

Re: best cheap whistles to buy for a new club

thanks everybody for the good advice! i have a LBW that i actually like, and agree on the low volume. i'll carefully look over all the suggestions and links, and then busy some whistles to get started. i think over time, i'll try out all the suggestions so i can be well educated. my problem is that ...
