Re: RIP Paddy Moloney

There was an episode of "Sé mo laoch" dedicated to Paddy Moloney in the mid-2000s. I have an audio recording of it, but sadly not the video. If anyone finds it anywhere on the web, could they please post the link here? Paddy speaks of growing up, learning from Leo, getting the Chieftains ...

Re: how do you get to Carnegie hall?

I don't see deliberately playing the tune without ornaments as being a particularly helpful or useful exercise. You would never actually want to play that way, because it will sound awful, and I don't see where it gets you in your musical development. What is that meant to accomplish? To me it look...

Re: how do you get to Carnegie hall?

Great topic! Would be great to read future replies. In classical music people spend lots of time practicing basics through scales, arpeggios and etudes. It looks like those things are a bit underrated in uilleann piping world. Basics is something worth practicing at any step of learning process, i b...

john wrote:'tape' -is this an old recording?
The copy i saw was audio cassette with gorgeous sleeve-notes. Pictures of pipes and pipers, info about instruments etc.
I believe it was recorded at mid-90s, maybe not.

Re: Groups Similar to Planxty and Bothy Band

Some of Christy Moore early albums. Pretty close to Planxty, and often pipers are involved. Also Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny did couple of similar tracks on their own. I think you kind of right, this type of bands belongs to those times, nowadays it's hard to find something like this. There was also...

Re: found on the internets

Now that you put it that way, it looks like i misjudge you. I thought i noticed something personal when you compared his playing to a completely outsiders' question in comments, but i guess i was wrong( Guess you're pretty objective in terms of summer schools and workshops, though you missed short r...

Re: found on the internets

Well yeah. I feel kinda sorry for interrupting and stuff, but the guy's my friend, and as nobody else cared to stand for him, i had to)) On the bright side, for those interested i can tell, that the "blues" thingy isn't his, he learned it somewhere, i think from either Paddy Keenan or Jerr...

Re: found on the internets

It is what it is, someone barely out of the beginner's phase playing away man, maybe I need to get out more.. Seriously, do you think it's an unfair assessment? Based on the video I linked above (Hag at the churn, Out of the ocean, Banish Misfortune) as well as that 'blues' video the playing is alm...
