Thanks for posting these links! They are great! My mom is learning the whistle too and neither of us have been able to find teachers where we live. These sites are indispensible for us small town dwellers.

First, find a pipe teacher. That person will be able to give direction as to where to find a practice chanter, what book they like to use, etc. Don't even think about getting a set of pipes yet. Its way to early for that. One place to find a teacher might be a local music store. Usually, there is a ...

Well, I just ordered my first Burke. A DBSBT. Its my first non-cheap soprano whistle. My son is learning fiddle and I have been accompanying him on my sweetone, and Clarke original. Since I've been playing the whistles so much now, I finally decided to get serious about having a nice soprano. My fir...

My first was a Clarke original. Can't go wrong with one of those. The Generations can be a little tricky for a first time instrument. The sweetone is a really nice compromise between the two, and is my favorite at this moment.

I began playing the NA flute way before I started in with the whistle. I am Potawatomi and Creek Indian, and grew up listening to my grandfather play the flute. There are essentially two kinds. The 6 hole and the 5 hole. The plains tribes, for the most part use the 5 hole. The Kiowa are an exception...

Are you talking about the high whistle or the low whistle? I think a lot of people have to use the piper's grip on the low whistle, just from what I have read here, and it is fairly unusual on the high whistle. Anyway, people might think they need to know which type of whistle you are refering to. ...

I think I could classify the early stages of learning any instrument as "obsession". Until I get good enough to play without causing displeasure in others, I am fairly obsessed with practicing. Now, I love every minute of it mind you, but the poor souls who share my life are not always so ...

Does anyone here use the pipe finger posture on the whistle?

Since I am a Uilleann and GHB padawan, I find the pipe finger posture to be quite natural feeling when playing the whistle. However, I was wondering if those of you who are more experienced might know of any drawbacks to using this technique on the whistle. As a matter of fact, I think I'll put up a...

Thanks! I thought I was doing it wrong! I was applying the GHB method to these Uilleann pipes, and it just did'nt seem right. Not only that, the connecting hose kept on blowing out of the bellows. Now it does'nt, and my pressure control is much better. I love this forum!

Cheers!

I am still in the dark ages, as I'm not using computer software for editing or recording. I use a Zoom MRS-802 8 track. It has a 40 gig hard drive and a USB interface so I can upload to my computer and then send the files where ever I want after that. I use an old Sure DY30 mic, and an Electro-Voice...

Bag/bellows technique?

Well, I've had my Uilleann pipes for about a month. I also have the 1st volume NPU dvd, which is great. However, I have a bit of confusion about just how the bag/bellows combination is actually employed. Is pressure maintained by the bellows, and the bag only used to keep pressure on the instrument ...

Hannah- Definitely go for it! This is a wonderful instrument, and it sounds as though you are already a multiple instrument kind of person. Don't worry about WhOA. Its really kinda fun! I have my WhOA pretty well in check by the reality of a wife and three kids who require most of my money. It...

I used to play the flute for the song service at my church. This was the first time I played the flute in any other setting than just practicing at home. At first, it was quite a struggle to keep from passing out, and to keep on playing! However, after keeping at it, I soon had no problem playing th...
