Use for an A whistle at session

Hi, I swear I saw a topic like this before, but I could not find it, so apologize me opening a new one... Am thinking about buying an Bb or A whistle, likely a Bleazey Blackwood. I like the sound of Bb whistles, and I have a Bb Uilleann Pipes set on order, so I could play same tunes in same pitches....

just tweaked my Generation Bb...

...and can encourage everyone who owns one: fill the gap under the windway in the mouthpiece with wax (or blu-tack or whatever). It improves the 2nd octave and overall playability so much. I created a rough surface on the wax, so I still have this Generation-like, windy sound, but a wonderful playab...

[...] To me, a nice patina adds character. And besides, things like UPs that are built to work correctly shouldn't be taken apart and polished and the like... it's too much risk in something not going back together correctly, and then where are you? I second that totally. My new set's going to be m...

David Power's cranning

Hi folks, referring to video #3 of the Tionol w/ David Power solo concert on www.uilleann.org - does anybody know how David performs this monster cran there? Which fingers does he use for it? Any other tricks maybe? It sounds so perfect, without any blips or squeaks often hearable when cranning... T...

You must be lucky! I tried a bunch of those at my music store the other day, and every single whistle was either totally out of tune or sounded quiet, breathy and the 1st octave was nearly impossible to hit. :( By the way, go and slap your music dealer. $100!! I've to pay 37€ (around $43) here and f...

Well, Chris is more than a couple of hours away from me ;) ...but the only flatpipe maker I know in germany is Andreas Rogge whose waiting list is a bit too long for my gusto. 4 years... Nevertheless I think about flying over to England when the fullset is finished. It's too worthy for entrusting to...

Thanks for your messages, Chris Bayley finally made it. I'm in touch with him to discuss the details. Will start with a Bb practise set which will be upgraded to a fullset in stages (since me is student and students are poor. ). Will be made of ebony, boxwood and brass, bore by Egan, measure b...

The french bagpipes overblow up to the 2nd octave's c (on G/C tuned pipes). That means, the range is from (f)g1 to c3, mostly chromatical. You can play in g, a, h and d minor and f, g, a, c, d major on those pipes (partly with massive crossfingering of course). To reach the high octave, you often mu...

I don't know anything about japanese music, but here some notes on chinese music: Japanese music may be, but chinese music is definitive NOT mostly pentatonic. I'm doing some musicologic studies of chinese music at the moment, and I really heard many styles of chinese music and many songs for each s...

to the makers: essential tools for making a chanter?

Hi, in order to really understand what's happening in a chanter while it's playing I thought about trying to make one myself. But I don't have any clue what tools I really need to be able to make one. I have some experience with a lathe (took part in a flutemaking workshop with Andreas Rogge 3 month...

Wow, what an interesting discussion. Thanks to all of you, I still have to translate some specific terms to german. ;)

(...pleasant activity on a sunday's night when you have to get up for university at 08:00 am and are unable to get some sleep...)

Special thanks to Bill for that monster reply.

Welcome! (even though I'm still new in here myself ;))

I just watched the video from your band's homepage - really nice playing, I like your whistle style. Would be glad if I could hear your piping as well.

All the best,
Gabriel :)
