Re: The daunting task

If it’s fairly common I’ll just get used to it. I play enough woodwinds to know there are quirks and compromises on EVERYTHING. ;) cheers.

Re: The daunting task

Thanks! Glad it’s not me.

I’m on a keyless, so venting that Eb isn’t going to be easy. ;)

The daunting task

Hello folks, I've finally gotten my hands on a proper flute. I've begun my tone exercises with it, but I have to say: Any version of "E" (low, middle, high) is substantially less resonant for me than any of the other notes I'm playing. I know high E is a pain on the Boehm flute until you c...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Maybe since this is more of a gig there'll be a set list and sheet music but you'd want to know that ahead of time. I've done many "legit" gigs (onstage or session work, by which they mean a recording studio session) and the standard and expected thing is that when you show up they'll be ...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

It's not as complex as it may seem. Most of the tunes are in the key of D or G and can be played on a keyless flute or whistle. Not as complex as playing Jazz. Now speed, that's another issue. I've been starting to get around on the Boehm flute pretty quickly since my two-year wood shed session (th...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Rick, while I’d be happy to sell my Byrne, I’d recommend buying Kevin’s wood Copley (go for the lined headjoint with tuning slide) as I think that would be a better fit for you. I’ve owned several Copley flutes (both wood and Delrin) and played a few more, all were easy players and each sounded gre...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Oh, here's something that I didn't see anyone else mention. I don't know about the gig you're going to be playing but in Irish Trad "sessions" nobody uses sheet music. Everyone knows the tunes and it's a spontaneous event where someone starts a tune and everyone else joins in. Maybe since...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Everyone here has given you great advice. I can't really add anything except that I've followed a long list of clues and determined that you must be RickDetroit on SOTW, lol. Welcome to my other favorite hangout. :) Oh no. Rick Detroit on SOTW is a naughty, naughty boy and a pathological liar. I'm ...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Wow, so much good information posted! I think I'll order the Worldtrad CD's, that's a great idea! Also, I think the wood Copley from Kevin may make a great first flute. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll come back here and post as I move forward. I've received the tunes from the bandleader. Lucky f...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

I second Loren's suggestion for a Copley. I notice that there are a few used flutes available at the Irish Flute Store: https://www.irishflutestore.com/collections/irish-flutes/previously-owned The Windward & the Noy flutes are high-quality, and the prices reflect that. WRT any of the flutes at...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Hi Rick, The Byrne for sale is mine. It’s an excellent flute, though not the easiest, nor the most difficult flute to play, falls somewhere in the middle I’d say. But then, it depends as much on you and your embouchure as anything else. My advice would be to see if you can find a Delrin Copley flut...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Would have been a great suggestion, however I'm packing already and fly on Sunday (and I have three gigs before then to keep me busy). Man, these flutes don't grow on trees. I've never had this challenge finding used gear before! :0 We cannot stress enough that a good source counts. You can get che...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Thanks Chet! I'll dig into the links tonight!

I get from the direction of your message that you don't think I can pull off some tunes on an Irish flute in 6 weeks?

Cheers..!

Re: introduction/a daunting task

Hi Stephen! Totally a valid suggestion, however I'm used to making things difficult for myself. ;) I appreciate your comment very much because that means I have a back-up plan if I fail in my mission. I am starting to shed the tunes using a cheap tin whistle to at least get them under my fingers.. g...
