Re: New Double-Whistle Idea
That might well work, but even if it doesn't, the idea of a slide whistle using magnets to lock into precise notes is brilliant. Using twice as many magnets would also let the in-between positions repel the magnet in the sliding part to make it lock into correct notes all the more rapidly, while rot...

Superb podcast about the dizi
I've just found a podcast about the dizi which is well worth a listen: https://chinaplus.cri.cn/chinaplus/mychina/art-and-literature/1410/20190131/243501.html - the audio plays at the top of the page. A fascinating instrument with a great sound. Presumably the membrane could be built into other type...

Re: OK, now I've seen everything
Thanks for that insight into it. It's a fascinating instrument which I didn't know nearly enough about, but having read up on it, I now want one.

Re: OK, now I've seen everything
In that video (one post above here), what's going on in that long extended section of tube to the left of the player's mouth? Does air space continue up inside it or is it just a counterweight?

Re: Tuning Slide Revolution?
So it lengthens the flute to lower the pitch and must also revolve the inner tube to correct the pitch further downwards for the lower notes. That lengthening of the flute should enable the holes to vary less in size than if there was only a revolution of the tube to drive the pitch change with no t...

Re: Tuning Slide Revolution?
It's a great idea, but you're 110 years late. It's been done and patented: US Patent no. 1,103,462 (1914) That's good to hear - I knew someone here would know if it had been done before. And thanks for all that information on it. Obviously the patent has expired and this would be far easier to do o...

Re: Tuning Slide Revolution?
I could be totally off-base here, but my immediate thought is that this would be a solution in search of a problem. Or, at any rate, an expensive and complicated solution to a problem minor enough that it doesn't warrant the solution. Well, it's actually about getting rid of expensive metal compone...

Re: Here's something that you can spend a ton of money on for no good reason
It does actually make sense, except that rectangular holes could be better still, with the ideal hole being a ring opening right round the entire tube. However, the bell note often seems to be the weakest one, even though it has what should be a perfect opening at the end, so there must be more to i...

Tuning Slide Revolution?
I've had an idea which may or may not be new, but if it is new I don't want to patent it as it could do immense harm for one manufacturer to dominate the market using it. Here's the plan then:- Think about how half-holing flattens notes. If you have a tube within a tube with the same holes in them a...

Re: Here's something that you can spend a ton of money on for no good reason
The holes underneath do indeed appear to be square as well. It likely makes little difference to the sound produced and will be about visual aesthetics, but if I wanted something of that kind I'd prefer one with hexagonal holes and keys.

Re: Narrow Low D
My Goldie Mezzo/Alto F measures at 18.16mm. My Goldie Low D measures at 21.8mm while the Low E (natural) Overton I used to have measured 21.9mm. My Alba Low E (natural) measures 18.4mm and is a very sweet player. An example of how wide-bore Burkes are for a given size is the Burke Mezzo/Alto F that...

Re: Narrow Low D
How narrow is the Goldie narrow bore low D in millimetres? My Goldie narrow-bore tenor D has an interior dimension of 20mm. I'm pretty sure that's the same bore size as the alto F (at least in 2015). Thanks for that information - that happens to be the internal diameter I chose for an experimental ...

Re: Double hole whistles?
Oh, interesting, hadn't thought about that. Most of my whistles are wooden, black (plastic) or silver colored, but I always liked the look of MK Midgies with their bright colors. I guess if I get to choose a particular color I'd go with purple (my favorite color). If that's too difficult, pink or b...

Re: Double hole whistles?
I can't remember where I read this, but I was pretty sure wall thickness was a factor. If that is a significant factor, it could enable corrections to be made by adjusting the thickness around the holes. I once had a go on a phenomenal quena belonging to a member of the group Yuraj Marka which had ...
