Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

I find the topic of "tweeking" to reveal an ironic activity; the spending of more $$$. To clarify it, has anyone got a detailed list of the tools, supplies and costs involved to do a proper tweek ? We know the whistle brands involved that are commonly tweeked, and the cost of the whistle ...

Re: Hello from Cape Town, South Africa

Cheers AW, I’m going to give that a try……..tomorrow. Appreciate the advice. I have found that if I give it a “t” it also lands a bit easier.

Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

There is a reason why Clarkes were dropped as soon as plastic headed Generations appeared during the 1950s. And that was well before the current Clarke production. I only recall hearing them played in public on very rare occasions, often just to get a different sound. The only use in a serious cont...

Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

Look Andrew, I am not here to pick a fight over this, been there and have a wardrobe full of tshirts. The observations of the hypothetical man with his new fiddle weren't wrong either, putting the blame on the instrument before learning to play it properly is where the problem is. You keep asking w...

Re: Hello from Cape Town, South Africa

There was a South African maker, by the name of Ian Turnbull. He seems to have fallen off the whistle map so to speak about a year or so ago and he doesn't seem to be making his whistles any more. Hopefully everything is OK with him and his family otherwise. Anyway ... The whistles he made are nice...

Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

A man walks into an instrument forum and starts: 'I just bought a fiddle but it must be faulty, when I use the bow it sounds scratchy and when I put my fingers down, the notes are all wrong. I played guitar all my life so I know string instruments..' What sort of a reaction do you think this would ...

Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

A whistle playing duet was mentioned earlier, so here is a charming example to cheer up the mood of this thread ... played on Generation whistles of course :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp7lw5G7Mug But how he played; great timing, lovely inventive variations whilst still giving the tune. And ...

Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

Consider if a large part of the issue isn't breathcontrol instead. Ever noticed it's almost invariably the total beginners who come on here complaining about Generations? The old running joke on this forum used to be how these whistles immensely improved when left in a drawer for a few years. Also,...

Re: Hello from Cape Town, South Africa

Welcome, Andrew! My in-laws emigrated from South Africa, and when I told them I was taking up the penny whistle, they said it used to be a common instrument, particularly in the townships (although I doubt they played ITM :) ). Is it still played much in SA? I wouldn't abandon the Clarke Original q...

Re: Hello from Cape Town, South Africa

Thanks folks. I have been in touch with Ian, and he has none for sale, but has offered me a Burke Low D Viper Pro Brass at what seems like a fair price. I'm just bellyaching as to whether I want to outlay that kind of money at the moment..... LOL I will take a look at the Killarneys as well. Perhaps...

Hello from Cape Town, South Africa

Hi Folks, coming at ya from Cape Town, SA, where I have just started whistling. 40 Years back I played a lot of recorder and then clarinet in the high school orchestra, but not much between then and now. I bought a Generation D here - which is all I can find locally. Fair instrument given the price,...

Re: Clarke Original D Tweak/Mods

[Thread revival. Mod] So, as a total beginner whistler, and ex recorder and clarinet player, I have now got two “instruments”. A Generation and a Clarke original. The Generation lacks any semblance of character, but is functional. The Clarke has what I consider a lovely breathy quality, but can not...
