Re: Flute making Apprentices

...only since they invented the wheel.... I've looked it up now. I'm none the wiser. It seems to be both. I can't find a particular preference for "handbasket" or "handcart" at any particular time or place. They're just both used. I always had the impression that the term "...

Re: Musty cork

I am thinking you are talking about the head joint cork. They do make them but I have only seen them for Boehm style flutes and I do not believe they are the same diameter. If yours is still one piece you should be able replicate one out of a wine cork. It should be an easy material to work with. I ...

My guess is they are asking how to post photos, just a guess.

Re: How many with keyed "Irish" flutes use the Cnat key?

I use it a lot. On rolls, for ease, and airs where a clearer Cnat is needed. Sometimes it is better for me than a cross fingered note. I would guess I use it almost half of the time I am playing a Cnat. If mine went out I would get it fixed. My least used keys are the long F, rarely, and my Bb, neve...

Re: experiences with Jay Ham flutes?

I still love the look of this configuration. I would love to see one in person! The problem I have always had was on the traditional eight key configuration I have to reach over the Eb key to reach the C/C# keys. My little fingers are very short and they can't make the trip without also depressing t...

Re: Switching from worn out cork to thread

To cut the bevel I used one of those razor blades that have a metal back on them. They don't flex and they are wider than the cork. I did the cut in one motion and the back kept the cut straight.

Re: Switching from worn out cork to thread

It is not hard to replace the cork. I was surprised how well I did and it was my first time although it took two tries so get extra cork if you are doing this yourself. Be very careful if you use plumbers (teflon) tape on a wood flute, for future reference. Is very easy to get the tenon much tighter...

Re: experiences with Jay Ham flutes?

The C foot joint is what most impressed me about his eight key flutes. I prefer the look of block mounted keys and I have never been wild about the mixing of post and block mounted keys on the same flute, even though they are more trouble free for the standing keys. The design also seems to make the...

Re: boxwood keyed flutes?

I think it depends on how the wood is treated and where you live. I have owned three boxwood flutes, the last one for years, and it has never warped. All three were made in very different climates.

Re: The Irish flute: An instrument or o style?

When a person asks if I play an instrument I just tell them I play the flute. It seems to satisfy their curiosity especially since the question is usually just a part of a larger conversation. Most people do not care what type of flute I play and become quickly bored if you start explaining flute di...

Re: Hammy Sound

I have owned brand new blackwood flutes that are reddish brown like that. Those particular flutes turned black as they age and get exposed to sunlight to the point that you can't even see the grain any more. It is the light that turns them darker just like boxwood turns darker for the same reason.

I hope you get all the pleasure and success from your new direction that you deserve. I also hope you can find a new person to take over for you as well. You have created a much needed niche, for years, for aspiring musicians.

Re: Slip sliding away...

As a person that also plays the trumpet I would put on some tuning slide grease. Not slide grease which is meant to be slick but tuning slide grease which meant to be a little sticky.

Re: Half-holing rasp

I find keys work much better than half holing, for the most part. I do not have a problem getting Cnat or Fnat but they are still not as clear as using keys. For years I played with an unkeyed flute and then I got a six keyed flute. At first I thought I had not spent my money wisely. I live in a dif...
