Re: Teaching whistle instead of recorder-public school?
I have a “why not?” to offer. At this stage it’s not about making good musicians, but about exposing the kids to musical concepts. Two things about whistles that aren’t true in most other instruments are the lack of chromatic relationships, and higher notes need to be louder. So what’s the intention...

Re: Shipping to Europe
First Class International is what the USPS recommends, and what I sent, with customs declaration and “Returned Goods” specified with “Whistle for refund” noted. But in Ireland, this will transfer it to An Post and so hit their additional paperwork. So sending back to Ireland, I’d avoid the USPS in a...

Re: Shipping to Europe
I tried shipping a defective Wild whistle back to McNeela last year through the USMail (using their label, but I had to pay). That’s generally recommended as a traceable and reliable method, which hands off to the local An Post in Ireland. HUGE mistake, since An Post kicked it back after 7 weeks wit...

Re: Mary Bergin Tutor Book 2
It’s the subpage /tutor.html that broke, and still is. But just go to the .com homepage and reselect the purchase page, that works fine.

Re: Lir whistles
I’m surprised, and sorry to hear it. Sounds like their ramp up has a good way to go. I’d suggest you don’t have to worry about any 10 day return limit, since you’ve already sent the complaint. Did you order directly from Lir, or through a retail shop?

Re: Lir whistles
Very helpful interview, thanks for the link. Being new to tin whistles (played several other instruments in the past), I waited patiently for six months and just received D and A whistles a couple of weeks ago. I did eventually sour a bit at the silent delays, but that’s in my past now. I now have w...

Re: Killarney Whistle Purchase ?
I spent a few months collecting a reasonable set of whistles, and Killarney was excellent over 3 orders (I have all four of their whistles, and I wish they made others). They were very communicative unprompted, quick to reply, and shipments have been faster than expected and perfect from Ireland to ...

Re: MK Chameleon
Yes it's very pricey but it's not outlandish compared to, say, a flute. The photos of the Chameleon are intriguing, but I'm confused by the two pics of the back side. The thumbholes speak for themselves, but what are we looking at in the second view? Those are two different versions. You can get th...

Re: MK Chameleon
I have two MK Pros and love them (F & Low C), but a conscious attraction to my getting into whistles in the first place was their simplicity. I have a pile of baroque recorders I’ve left idle, and having a fully chromatic instrument of any kind is attractive. But for me & whistles, that miss...

Re: What's a fipple?
I think it’d be helpful and entertaining to start with a flute, or even an empty bottle. Blow across it and show how it won’t work if the angle is wrong. Then show this doohickey made with the right angle built in. It’s the difference between a flute and a whistle, a “fipple”.

Re: Anyone play Howard low C? (Or D)
Lower holes, pointer-to-ring finger, center-to-center is 3 3/8” on the MK Low C. I find I have to roll my fingers up slightly to get a good seal, of course with a pipers grip. (I’m very new to it, improving nicely.) The MK C is noticeably softer, breathier, and overblown easier than the Howard D. Fo...
