Re: Is Warbl good for a beginner?

I just received one of the new mouthpieces that are now shipping with the Warbl. Much better than the old tube mouthpiece I had and the air flow is a bit closer to most real whistles. It also has a clever way of redirecting most of the moisture down and out of a vent at the back. I was using a Gener...

Re: Tonguing technique

The discussion about fast tonguing made me realize that I often alternate from T to K articulation and back when trying for speed.

Is this a common practice or just something I have developed?

Re: Any recording tricks for flutes and other wind instrumen

Simple question, but the answers quickly get complicated because there are so many variables. Different types of microphones with different pickup patterns. Different mic placements based on these different types and on different playing styles. Different rooms and recording technology. Here is a sh...

Isn't it? But I imagine it's difficult to design something that does not affect the tone / timbre and still does a good job of blocking wind. Plus they need to justify that $40 plus price tag somehow. :)

Too bad we don't have the equivalent of the win-d-fender for whistles!

Thanks to both of you! It's been exciting to see how quickly the Warbl has evolved over such a short time.

Re: Is Warbl good for a beginner?

Again, I don't want to discourage you from getting a Warbl. It may be just what you need to get in enough practice time. Think about it like a flight simulator. You can learn an amazing amount about flying on a simulator, but you need air time get comfortable with the airplane. I have no doubt you c...

Re: Is Warbl good for a beginner?

The Warbl has been a practical means for me to learn new tunes late at night when the family is asleep BUT it's no shortcut to learning the breath control you need for a regular whistle. In fact you might pick up some bad habits since you don't need to adjust your breath the same way to bring the in...

Re: Recommendations On Microphones For Recording Tin Whistle

Narzog posted some useful information but there are some assumptions in there you need to consider. Are you recording to your computer? Then there are two common methods: 1) a direct USB mic that is self contained or 2) a mic that plugs into some kind of external audio interface. USB microphones are...

Re: Burke Whistle question

Since I don't have measurements I don't know for sure, but I think the Burke high D "narrow bore" is around the same bore as traditional/classic high D whistles. I wish all Burkes were available in narrower bore sizes. Richard, you made me curious enough to check. My Burke aluminum narrow...

Re: Monster Grips for slippery whistles

Idea: looking at larger bore whistles, has anyone tried creating a thumb rest or more grip control on a whistle, by placing a wide elastic band around the whistle where appropriate. Anyone tried that? A common blue elastic like newspapers and parcels are wrapped in, which is about 1/4" wide, w...

You are right that it's come up before. I like the Joannie Madden Smackdown Method that Jerry Freeman offered in the thread below. Many other suggestions there too.

Re: Let's Play!

Probably just me but I spent hours taking apart an old mechanical clock. The well balanced gears made wonderful tops that seemed to spin forever. Hmmm. Wonder if that has anything to do with my interest in bicycle mechanics.

An alternative would be a strong historical narrative, but then you are irritating someone politically, because your strong narrative is leaving someone out. Most of us try to adopt an approach that focuses on learning to read "primary sources," documents from the time period being studie...

Re: Recommended tweaked whistle in the freeman price bracket

Someone just reminded me of mack hoover whitecaps as well. This might be a good solution for me since I already have 3 brass cheap whistles, a generation, a faedog and a clare two piece; non of which I can get a good sound out of at stock levels, maybe they just need a nice cap to make them sing, o...
