Re: Susato Kildare B-flat - S- or M-Series

The three really nice whistles in the S series are the Db, C and B and I'd recommend them as the best of the Susato whistles, along with the Eb VSB. I have the S series Bb and A but their tone is softer and lacks the bite of the Db, C and B. I can't comment on the M bore whistles above G as I don't ...

Purest toned whistles in my bucket are the Burkes.

Re: Seasonal: Cold Hands

I sometimes use close fitting gloves like these to play whistles out of doors when it is very cold in the mountains here. http://international.vileda.com/com/products/show/1711/34 The coating is thin and soft so that dexterity is not lost. As they are not coated on the back of the hands there is no ...

Re: newbie's first post

The Generation Eb and Bb are two of their best whistles IMHO and both are very low cost. My favourite Eb's are the Susato VSB and the Generation nickel body with a Walton D mouthpiece. Just some low cost ideas.

Re: Which mezzo-soprano A whistle?

I'm a Susato fan and have the narrow bore A which I find delightful. It's perfectly in tune, rich, mellow and plays nicely even up into the 3rd octave without screeching. I doubt that I would be happy with the medium bore A. My Chieftain A is super whistle with a lovely flute like tone and they are ...

Weasels are too good to risk messing up. Send it to Tommy, is my best advice.

Ask the Clark Tin Whistle company. I found them very helpful with some history questions.

Re: Modes in ITM

Historically there is no doubt that the mode system developed through the Church. I'm sure that is true but a number of Greeks wrote about modes and their use. Here is a quote from Aristotle who wrote about 2,300 years ago in his book 'Politics' : "The musical modes differ essentially from one...

Re: Who makes the best sounding Bb?

Generation Bb is hard to beat IMO. Last time I was London Hobgoblin I went through the box and selected the six I liked the tone of best and so now I have eight scattered around the house. Unlike the other Gens I find they often don't need even the putty tweak to tame them. Water Weasel is my all ti...

Re: Dixon vs Syn (Bb-C-D whistles set)

I have had both Syns and Dixons. From what you have said about the tone you like I think the Dixon polymer whistles will suit you much more than the brighter sounding Syns.
