Hmmm... the plot thickens. I too just received a flute from Terry, about 6 weeks ago. He declared it at about half its value, classified it as 9205909000 MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, WIND, and I paid $101.75 Canadian dollars in duty, $107.86 in federal sales tax and $143.81 in provincial sales tax, mercifull...

Aerowhip, So you mean the full value was declared and you were charged no duty or brokerage fees? What about state taxes? Was it delivered to you by the postal service or by courier? Can other Americans comment - when do you pay duty on imported commercial items? In Canada, if shipped by courier, we...

The other aspect of this discussion is "brokerage fees". The way it works up here in Canada is that if something is shipped UPS, FedEx etc. from outside Canada, the courier charges the receiver "brokerage fees" based on the declared value, for the "service" of "bro...

FS: (or preferably trade) A Pile o' Stuff

I’d be most interested in trading these at the value of your items new (in good condition of course) for the value of mine new, indicated below. I'll consider offers if no one wants to trade. All of the instruments are in excellent shape with no cracking whatsoever and very little wear. For info and...

Myrddin, An 'A' hornpipe would still behave in the same way as The Whistle Player's Hornpipe in D; it would play one set of notes in the lower (main) register and then switch to another set of notes in the second (trickier) register. But I must reiterate that there are MANY tunes that fit within thi...

An 'A' Whistle Player's Hornpipe is on its way depending on how well the low D goes. 'A' would make a lot of sense for this instrument since a good many session tunes stick between A/G' and A".

The insurance scam sounds plausible. Before I read that idea, I'd been thinking... I wonder if the seller is confused (both price and wait time). There is of course another possibility. Without lightly casting aspersions, how could someone who actually bought and and owned an Olwell be so mistaken a...

If the low octave is D E F# G A B c#, the upper octave is a b c#' etc. how do you play d e f# and g ? Or am I totally misunderstanding this ? I don't think you are. As far as I can tell those notes don't exist on the instrument-except for d. It is produced by opening a thumbhole. Then when you go t...

Yes, the Whistle Player's Hornpipe overblows at a twelfth. However, the interesting point is there is a good number of tunes that do fit the range. I'll be putting up a "growing list" on the website shortly. Plus this instrument is great for "vamping" or "riffing" becau...

Sure, I'll have a sense of humour when I hear something that's genuinely funny. Cliche, worn-out slurs directed towards the things this forum is supposed to be about are, at best, distracting, and unhelpful and perpetuate confusion and ignorance around the subject. At worse... well I think I went ov...

Yes, I can see why you don't like history and don't want any more quotes. The truth gets in the way of your prejudices. Your true colors are apparent with statements like "Scottish agony bags". No one argues that the pipes you mention are uilleann pipes. As far as going off topic, you were...

Back to irishpiper's last post, you may disagree but the points you bring up are incorrect. Yes, pipes in Ireland seem to have been used in battle before they died or were stamped out in the 18th century. Which is exactly why the revivalists decided to call them "war pipes" when they pushe...
