Re: Metal Chanters
It only played two or three notes? Is there a front picture of the chanter? I have to wonder if octave tuning would become a bit more 'linear' with no real wall thickness...maybe not linear, but a predictable curve?

Re: Second octave e not sounding cleanly
I've had the same thing happen for a few years now, but it only happens in the summer months (May-Oct, where I live) and it only happens with the reeds I've made - which is the real problem. The 2nd E is still approachable with the right tricks, but simply playing it yields what sounds like a growli...

Re: Cool UP cases from England
If you are stateside...I found one of these recently and purchased for around $80 US. https://planomolding.com/products/aw2-36-rifle-shotgun-case-pla11836?variant=40468052443296 If you don't know the name, Plano makes plastic rifle cases and fishing tackle boxes (reed-making kits). This is quite rob...

Brad Angus is making them. I have a C# chanter of his, it is a quiet joy to play.

Re: UP tunes suitable for a memorial service
'Open the Door for Three' does "How Heavy is my fate" on their 'Joyful Hour' recording - AKA "This Gloom upon my soul" that is quite nice, slow and easy to learn, the text is on The Session.
Maybe I have the names reversed, it's the same tune.

Re: Ebay Items
I had the same problem with my 2nd octave E growling this summer. The same thing happened last summer though I'd never had the problem before. As both summers ended, so did my problem. I usually like the E's, nice tone for both, both are normally in tune. Other than both problems occurring during th...

Re: Ebay Items
Sorry - you are correct (I was not sure)...I checked it last night. The low E is, without the insert very, very sharp - like 35-40 cents sharp and just sounds terrible. At the same time, the high E is more or less where it should be (per tuner), around 5 cents sharp. But with the insert, the low E d...

Re: Ebay Items
I saw that on one of his chanters a few years ago, and e-mailed him about it. He said he added the tubing rather than simply starting with a smaller hole. He didn't say why, he just said he did it that way. Years before this, I did the same thing on a D. Williams D chanter and found that it helped t...

I don't know about Mr. Vallely, but I heard Mr. McNamara say 'no' to the question once.

Re: Flat C#, every other note seems good
I've seen C nat. at -28 (or so) in a few books and I believe Mr. Woof said something similar here in the past. To my ears it gives a "sad" tone, but alternate fingerings on the low hand can move it to -4 or so, if it's a happy day. Come to think of it, I've also seen the C nat. at +12...so...

Re: Sending WOOD overseas - how to package it?
Try shipping it in a bag with loose, dry rice or buy those little desiccant bags and toss some in? Before air conditioning was common here (south coastal USA/Gulf of Mexico) it was common to see table salt shakers on tables with rice grains added to absorb moisture...my grandparents lived out in the...
