Re: An Speic Seoigheach

Serendipity! I just got "The Dusty Miller" for Christmas and ( yes, I'll admit it  ) spent a little time yesterday hunting for notation on just that tune. It completely knocked me over! Thanks for the recording; maybe between the two of you I can get it burned into my ear bet...

Thanks Harry. It was actually Gays playing of this tune that made me want to learn it.

Re: An Speic Seoigheach

Thank you, Steve. Beautifully done! A challenging arrangement for harmonious regulator playing. Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it. :) An Speic Seoigheach is most definitely challenging! The recording I put online took about 2 hours of continuous attempts to get it to the point where I was h...

An Speic Seoigheach

I've been working on An Speic Seoigheach, and I'm in love with this beautiful air. I've made a recording of the tune and its available (free) at the following URL:

Re: Sanding the Head: how do you know when to stop?

Hi Boyd, Having good reeds to compare your work to is definitely useful, but as you'll appreciate, copying a good reed is no guarantee of success (as I know from personal experience). I guess this comes from the fact that cane is not a uniform material. I am sure that every reedmaker has made potent...

Re: Sanding the Head: how do you know when to stop?

I think that experience plays a big part. I have a box full of failed reeds/reeds I have ruined through experimentation. I use a method which involves pre-scraping the head before tying onto the staple. Having tied on, I rest the reed blank for as long as possible before beginning sanding and scrapi...

Re: Periods of learning and long breaks in between

I started playing in 1992 and played most days back then. However, things started happening like jobs and getting older and having less freetime. Currently, I play mostly at weekends, but worry about playing for too long incase I disturb others around me. What I'd give for a little place in the coun...

Re: (Reed makers) How Long Does it take?

I've always found that reeds made because you actually need them there and then don't last as long as reeds made just for exercise, which are forgotten about for a period of months/years, and then rediscovered. I tend to make reeds, scrape them to crowing point, and then chuck 'em in a box and forge...
