Re: Ebay Items

My initial reaction was that it is a Pakistani-made set (particularly the bellows). However, on reflection, it looks like some Robbie Hughes sets I've seen.

Mainstock plug

Does anyone make plugs for mainstocks (so that I could remove the mainstock and use the bag/bellows as a practice set) ?

Re: Import Duties

Customs duties should be 0%. However, watch out for Value Added Tax (VAT - essentially sales tax) which is 20%. Budget a broker fee of between $60 and $100 which your courrier will charge for preparing and submitting the customs documents. It seems that the Harmonized System (HS) Code for bagpipes i...

Re: Proper Tempo for Dance Tunes

I might be wrong but I recall Breandán Breathnach writing about the correct speeds (in his opinion) for dance tunes in the intro to Ceol Rince na hÉireann. I don't have the book but someone who does might be able to chime in.

Re: Tight joints

Stuck parts can be difficult. Firstly, if you have a dehumidifier, try putting the pipes in a small room with the dehumidifier and leaving them there for a few days. If that doesn't work, try putting the pipes in the fridge (dry air). Once you get the parts unstuck, remove some of the binding. In fa...

Re: MacLeod and Harris Chanter

Daryl McWhirter in British Colombia plays a Robbie Hughes chanter. He's a pretty good reedmaker. You should try contact him.

Re: Sending chanter from USA to Europe - 2 questions

Any ideas on what material is best to use to wrap the chanter inside the case or package for slowing the transition from warm to cold without having any condensation problems? My suggestion would be to remove the reed, wrap it in tissue/kitchen towel, place it in a small box, seal the box (mark it ...

Re: Sending chanter from USA to Europe - 2 questions

In my experience, the maximum insurance that the courrier would offer was $1000. But it's been a few years so that might have changed. The biggest risk is that the reed gets cold too quickly, and collapses. I've never had luck receiving chanters with reeds (the main reason I learned to make my own)....

Re: Bellows style with no need for seasoning ever

Using a double ply of leather is good for making it airtight, but it can make for stiff, heavy bellows. It's always a trade-off - performance vs. weight. comfort vs. durability. I have a set of Dow bellows and I find them to be very good (minus the 90 degree connector, which is, sometimes quite litt...
